John Lewis Price Match Guarantee

Seriously been let down by John Lewis today. They advertised price match guarantee for a TV we purchased. A few days later we found it cheaper at another major store. We contacted John Lewis to see if they can return the small difference. We were promised that someone will be in touch in 48 hours but never did. However today we contacted John Lewis ourself and they informed us that they cannot give the difference. The reason is because when John Lewis contacted the other company, "apparently" it was out of stock. First I thought they were having a laugh, how does an item being out of stock at competitors store make a difference when they promised a price match, I don't remember anyone reading they small prints to me, all they said it "if you find it cheaper anywhere else except online then we will match it".
I Seriously been let down, and John Lewis was the last place I would have thought they would do a sneaky little manoeuvre like that. It just shows that no matter how big they are, you cannot trust anyone.

We carry a wide range of lines, and the competitor has to have the line actually in stock (rather than available only to order) for us to match the price. For products that we deliver, we ask that the competitor is able to deliver in equivalent timescales to us, and on products that require delivery, we'll take delivery charges into account when comparing prices. Our standard delivery service is free for orders of £50 and over. Find out more.

As has been said, if it is not in stock at the other place, then JL are acting within their terms.0 -

Suppose I set up a shop "selling" televisions. I didn't actually have any stock in my shop but my advertised prices were 50% lower than anywhere else on the high street.
Would you expect JL to match the prices of the goods I had listed?
The terms that states the goods must be in stock in order to price match is the same with every retailer who has a price match guarantee. We and the competitor must have stock ready for delivery. We’ll get back to you within 1 working day with a response to your claim, and if we find that the item is indeed cheaper (and in stock) elsewhere we’ll give you a call to take your order.Find a matching product with identical manufacturer and model number in stock, available for immediate shipment from a competitor.Products must be brand new, boxed, carry a comparable warranty and be in stock at time of purchase
Etc

Something similar happened to me once, in that a company refused to price match because their rival's website didn't explicitly state that it is in stock. They had the item in stock because I phoned to check. However, because their website didn't explicitly confirm the stock status either way then the price match was refused.0

Looks like the promise is available for up to 28 days after purchase so might worth keeping an eye out and checking the stock position, and of course price and other conditions. If money saving starts to involve irritation or frustration the fine line between thrift and greed should be examined.0

A colleague who ran a business once told me other shops always sold things cheaper than him- when they were out of stock..0

Very odd how so many people backing John Lewis on a issue that most people would be on the customer side
hmm
i.e. Money Saving King states "that Jonny should have bothered reading what he was buying" , ok Mr John Lewis Associate
Hey Jonny there another thread on how John Lewis is being cheeky with price match guarantee, I recommend you read that and keep your complaints because soon you will be able to claim, its just a matter of time before trading standards get on to retailers for mis selling, everyone will be claiming back like PPI0
