Out of London, Stratford upon Avon is nice, and lots to see and do.
And, Arundel, in West Sussex we really enjoyed.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

York's nice too. Used to go every year with a couple of friends.

We've had a lot of nice breaks in Shropshire. Would highly recommend Ludlow, Shrewsbury or Ironbridge - plenty to do for the weekend, excellent food and some really lovely places to stay.
On the other hand, just pick somewhere you've never been and start investigating!0 -
So many lovely UK places for a few days - Chester, York or Stratford spring instantly to mind.0

Lake District and Cumbria area all good if you like the outdoors, Keswick in particular is a nice place to stay.
Scotland of course, stunning, either the cities or the Highlands for abroad Krackow is nice. Airport close to the city, fantastic square with restaurants and bars in and you can always go and see some of the sites in the local area if you wanted. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
If you want to go abroad, Krakow is absolutely amazing (and cheap!)
For our mini-breaks, I'm from York so it's a bit of a nightmare for me, and I especially dislike other similar places, so we tend to rent a cottage in Wales or Scotland and drive there.
You say you don't have a car, do either of you drive? If so then you can cottage it somewhere remote and rent a car at the train station/airport.
Also highly recommend Edinburgh, it's really beautiful, or a hotel at one of the Lochs and chances are the hotel might be able to arrange some transport.0 -

We both drive, always had issues with hiring cars as under 25, though my boyfriend turns 25 next month. We are from quite a remote village community so it is something we hold dear. I am insuranced on one of my parents cars so I suppose I could ask them but could mean a massive detour as I live a long way away! I really want to visit the lakes/ Yorkshire (general up north!) though I think the travelling might mean it'd be a longer break, though hopefully less expensive than flying somewhere (neither of us are keen flyers anyway!).
Exciting, I shall have to find out how much car hire is for us!
Thanks! :T0 -
Thanks for all the other suggestions too - the only one I've been to is Arundel so lots of choice!0

It's funny, I'm from there and I never thought to recommend it! I agree, Keswick is a lovely place.
I guess with living here and personally favouring cities, when I think of a UK break I think of Manchester, Liverpool or London. I guess it's vice versa for those that live in cities?!
I agree with the York suggestion too, it's a lovely place.0 -
Went to Lyon! FANTASTIC city! And so Friendly to us non-French speakers. VERY easy to get around the city on metro and buses. Very chilled. Think Eurostar goes, though we got very cheap flights from Gatwick and we air b'n'b it, which was a great experience. Want to go back asap.
I would go to Edinburgh any time. My favourite city in UK (as it currently is!) How about Northumberland? It looks so beautiful.0
