And the responses show, like talking to your customers, some know nothing, and are very keen to prove it to you. Good advice, and you've just reminded me to get the oil changed on the Corsa!

It seems, despite advances in technologies, nothing really changes....similar issues on all sorts of engines have reared their ugly heads for 50 years or more.

As fro folk pulling other folk up for a lack of punctuation?

That alone , to me, beggars belief.

I admit, I struggled to understand the complaint..probably due to the indecipherable accent the complaints were posted in?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

If you have either a Skoda or vw or seat with the 1.2 three cylinder engine be warned change the oil when you should I've just done one at work basically the timing chain jumped a tooth and it's very common problem basically the tensioner goes weak and especially if the engine idles a while the chain jumps a tooth and it cuts out and obviously won't restart it took some finding but speaking to the dealer it's very common on the three cylinder engine fortunately thou it doesn't bend the valves the timing chain has to be replaced and you get new sprockets tensioner and a modified guide rail parts cost is around £120 mark this one actually failed when the car was in for other repairs totally unrelated

Basically the tensioner goes weak, especially if the engine idles, while the chain jumps a tooth and it cuts out and obviously won't restart.
It took some finding, but speaking to the dealer it's very common on the three cylinder engine. Fortunately though, it doesn't bend the valves and the timing chain has to be replaced. You can get new a sprocket tensioner and a modified guide rail. The parts cost is around the £120 mark, this one actually failed when the car was in for other repairs which were totally unrelated.

Might benefit from some spacing. ;)

Don't know what your trying to say TBH I read it as the OP was warning us and other readers of the 1.2 3 cyl engine has a problem with tensioners and could be costly and a possible reason not to start seems OP is in the mechanics trade. I simply added that its not a surprise, and some back ground on why they may go, and a hint to why some VVT engines also suffer poor oil!.

Then why suggest worried jim posts "help"?

How can not changing the oil at the stated service schedule, make a cam chain tension go "weak"?

Accelerated chain, sprocket and tensioner running face wear causing the chain to go "slack"? As a result the tensioner reaches and/or exceeds it's limit.

Is it only the tensioner, or could the chain be stretching as well, or the teeth wearing, and that makes the chain ride up on the teeth whatever the tension?

I'm reminded of a bike chain (push bike for me, but I assume similar applies for motor bikes). The push bike's derailleur keeps tension in the chain, but once either the sprockets or chain are worn enough to jump you might as well change the whole lot together.

I've never heard/seen a V/X 3 cylinder have undue problems, unless its been badly maintained.
Seen plenty with timing sprockets worn to jagged points, timing chain cutting a hole in the case and proud owner pointing out the fresh Mobil 1 they've just put in it. What they haven't done is fish out all the old bits of oil filter that are blocking the galleries because someone saved a fiver in its early life by missing a filter change.
