If you were no longer a student from January, and you lived in the UK and you were over 18 years old, then yes, you should have been paying council tax.

Not necessarily. If the OP was staying with various friends who were paying the CT for their homes then it has already been paid. CT is per property rather than per person living there.

    hi there,

The council tax is only due on the house not on each person living there. So for example my new house is CTAX band C approx £1300 a year whether 1 person or 20 people live there. I too was living with parents before this but lodging i had to state I was not liable for the council tax on their property as they were and still are paying it. :)

The basis for the tax is residential property, with discounts for single occupants.

Each dwelling is allocated to one of eight bands coded by letters A to H (A to I in Wales) on the basis of its assumed capital value (as of 1 April 1991 in England and Scotland, 1 April 2003 in Wales). Newly constructed properties are also assigned a nominal 1991 (2003 for Wales) value.

Sorry so just to make sure I understand..
If they ask for specific addresses of friends etc then I csn give them - as long as 2 adults were there and paying CTax then it doesnt matter ehether I was or not.
So I can just say no fixed address?

You wouldnt be responsible for the tax on any of the properties as you arent the registered owner or tenant. But yes if you want to make things simpler you could say no fixed address. :)

on another note with regard to the electoral roll it is important to put your previous registered address for electoral roll purposes though as you will have troble getting mortgages or credit in the future - this is not covered by the council tax registration you need to do it seperately.

You was of no fixed address so put that. Its true. Alternatively you can list every where you lived. A discount is given for single occupants of 25%. So if you affect that then maybe dont list that address.
