dont think it would be worth the time to blag your way to getting an extended "test drive" - you'll have to jump through the sales process and make yourself look like a very likely byer.

Depends on the term of the dealer's insurance. Some have cover for unaccompanied test drives, some don't.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I think you'd have to plan your "act" very well to get a overnight test drive. You'd have to get deep into the sales process and act out that you're a likely buyer but just have reservations about the car. The dealer should believe that you will fall in love with the car if you have it for a day so will be willing to hand the keys over and let it happen.
Based on your responses I think you're likely to appear in that situation. But do you want the time commitment to do this and the grief of dealing with the followups from the dealership - I wouldn';t0
