    For what car?

I dont think they'll give you a car willy nilly unless you are committing to buy, subject to a successful test drive.

Then they *might* lend you their demo car.

Not all dealerships will send a salesman with you on test drives. For my Fiancee's car I was just given the keys and given vague directions of a suitable test route and left to get on with it. When I was looking at cars, I wanted to test drive the same car in both automatic and manual versions. For the auto, the salesman came with me, but for the manual, he just gave me the keys. This was a 30-45 minute test drive. Not exactly a 24 hour one, I know, but better than a standard 5 minute nip round the block with a dealer breathing down your neck.

I have seen adverts for 24hr test drives so they do exist. Just ask the dealer, the worst they can do is say no!

At the moment im looking at Citreon DS range and Fiat - but i only drive autos and some places only offer test drives on new manual cars. Which is odd

Have you actually asked any dealers? You may not get 24 hrs but you can usually get an extended, unaccompanied test drive if you look like your a genuine, potential customer and not just the usual "tyre kicker".

Again, speak to your local dealerships or ring round a few to see who's got what and whether they can get hold of an auto for you.

give the dealer in question a call and ask have they an auto on demo. If they dont ring around others until you find one who has.

The last car we bought the salesman was very chatty. He drove the car out of their lot whilst still chatting away and then said so now I'm going to shut up so you can concentrate on the car which he did!

If you are after something longer, could ring around car rental companies? It would cost, but you won't have to deal with sales people expecting you to commit :)

In my experience most authorised main dealers will allow you take the car out on your own and for extended periods if asked and if you're a genuine buyer. TBH, I wouldn't buy a car from a dealer if I couldn't do this.

Renault, Peugeot, Citoren, Nissan used to do 24 hour test drives.

IF you booked the Renaut one for a Friday, you had the car until Monday morning!

I happened to book a new Laguna estate for a 24 hour test drive in 2007 (when this shape came out)

    - just happened to be the weekend we was moving house..

    Lexus are doing one:

Wonder if there are any Alan Partridge conventions coming up..
