Cheap Dash Cam

Looking on ebay, dash cam prices range from £15.00 into the hundreds.

Confused what I should buy, I'm looking for something that views all round the car (if that's possible)

Must be simple to set up.

My price range currently would be under £50.00.
I'm hopeless with technology, in addition, I suffer with MH issues, what may appear simple, I struggle with, may I ask, please be patient, thank you

Nothing under £60 will be worth it - the definition (to read VRMs) is critical it many cases - a sub £50 unit will be made down to a price, plastic lens slow refresh (frame) rates. Be guided by your insurer - find out if then gave a list of approved products they provide a discounted policy for - it makes it worthwhile for both of you.

    £60??? How about £32?

I suggest you watch this from 05:14 - 08:14 even in twilight all the car numbers (sorry VRMs) are clearly readable.

If the only criteria is ability to read number plates then you don't need to spend a lot.

I'm considering buying the G1W on ebay,

Seems to be able to do the job, cheap enough as well, 1 question, would I need to purchase a SD card?

Think I'll be getting myself one of those G1W cameras. That guy's footage on YouTube is good stuff.

    Most likely.

    Wrong. Totally and utterly wrong.

My dashcam was less than £40. I went for the DVR-047. It's essentially the non-HD version of the DVR-207. It records at a full FPS with no refresh issue whatsoever. Most dash cam units are plastic, even the more expensive ones?

While you mention the definition of the camera, I somewhat agree: the benefits of HD are obvious, however the benefits of non-HD are less obvious:
    • No Gaps Between Files Whatsoever
    • Better Night Time Quality / Less Noise
    • Cheaper (of course)
    • Don't require a Class 10 SD card
    • Easier to find

There is no issue with quality on mine. I can easily read a number plate no problem. I imagine the improvement of HD would be for cars coming in the other direction perhaps where the number plates are slightly harder to read, but not impossible.

Additionally, I bought a Garmin XT charger to run it off. The chargers that come with these devices are usually horrible. I doubt they'd even get a CE mark in this country. Some have even been known to block GPS and Bluetooth signals there is that much interference coming off (Google if you don't believe me). A Garmin Charger cost me about £10 but is completely smooth and makes absolutely no noise, even on MW :D

  • I know nothing about mechanics, would it be possible to hard wire the device to the car?

Yes. Cut the lighter plug off and wire direct to a fused supply.
