A mate bought a TomTom. Opened it in the car and stuck it on charge. Went into the shop he worked at with the car right outside.

Heard a funny noise and went out to find his window smashed and the SatNav gone. Less than an hour...

With some of the dashcams costing lots its a risk if its clearly visible. The techmoan review of a chinese cam that looks like the gopro mentions he wouldnt leave that in the car because it looks more expensive that it really is.

I have never paid customs from Chinese sellers. Everything is usually marked down as $10.

Wife bought me a Garmin one for my bike, but I also use it in car, records in 1080p and clarity is excellent. No idea how much it was though

Classic old wives tale. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who had a sat nav nicked. Mine never comes off the screen, and it's been there in every dodgy neighbourhood ever, with the camera, and the radar detector. Guess what? Still have all the glass intact.

Until I saw your post, I'd have been tempted to buy the one posted, do you have any recommendations?
I wasn't recommending either of those products ; they were simply to show that it is possible to get more than one device working off a lighter socket.

I've found "easylifeproduct" seller on eBay is selling fake G1Ws with the inferior chipset. Use another seller.
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

Yes. Cut the lighter plug off and wire direct to a fused supply.

Except in this case, the lighter plug clearly has the 12V -> 5V converter inside it

I know what you meant, but the OP said they know nothing about mechanics, so best be clear that it's a bad idea as written!

It's a stupid idea anyway. A much easier way would be to simply buy a cheap 12v socket (like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/new-cigarette-lighter-PLUG-SOCKET-12V-for-PEUGEOT-106-205-306-307-407-NEW-/281159149415?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4176642767) insulate it and wire it directly into a switched live, whether that be your current 12v socket, or via a relay and your head unit.

    Easy.
