It was a natwest card not a natwest machine. The limit may be down to the individual card as my daily limit is £300.

And on one of my cards it's £700(!), so yes, there are separate card and machine limits, coincidentally both own £200, but not linked!

It was probably running windows XP and blue screened.

How does this count as "daylight robbery", as the OP says. Similar with the comment further down about people's money being taken. Nothing has been taken, no robbery has happened. It's unfortunate, yes, but there was no intent on the part of the bank!

Not sure why you don't think its good being on XP?
XP is very stable and has no problems being used on an ATM.

Oh yes it does, it is EOL and MS are not providing any updates any more since the beginning of April.

Thankfully you are not in charge of the ATM's. I do wonder why some people reply on here when they have no knowledge but post as if they are ITK.

Hope your mother got it back OP. Must admit though, I would never draw that amount of money from an ATM. I needed £100 the other week, and I did 2 X 40 and a 20, in case something like this happened. I certainly wouldn't want that much being held hostage for 2-3 weeks.

...so it's you I seem to be stuck behind every time I go to an ATM!

No, I am not in charge of any ATMs. Nor did I claim to be in the know either.

However, you post as if you are in the know and obviously do not have a clue about banks.

Microsoft have not removed support and have not stopped providing updates for Windows XP. The only thing that has happened is that you have to pay for it now ($200 a machine).

The bank's have CSA's with microsoft and pay for the extended support. The same with Windows 2003 servers. It does take time to migrate, however the financial incentive usually provides the kick to get them done (the $200 is likely to double in the second year - it usually does).

Also, how do you think the ATMs will get the viruses?, none of the ones I am aware of are internet facing and don't go through the normal penetration testing.

Would it worry you to know that some banks still have important servers that are running on NT4 and Windows 2000?, they haven't been in support for years but still run quite happily.

I wouldnt dream of doing 3 transactions even if I needed £500 out, the chances of anything going wrong are miniscule
