How can people be so nasty?

I had an attempted bag snatch as I walked past pub with a full beer garden. I managed to keep hold of my bag, my elbow made contact with the guys face and my foot made contact with his groin. (this was how I was told to word my statement) The only person that rushed over to help was a gent who worked in an office four floors up at the end of the street who witnessed this from his window.
the people in the beer garden just stood and watched. The guy had been attacking women in the area. Unfortunately for him I was not to be trifled with that day. I was shocked that no one even attempted to help and when the police arrived no one saw anything.0 -
I was driving my son and his friend to a gig one night in the rush hour when the friend said there was a woman lying at the bottom of a steep flight of steps at the bottom of an overpass. Cars were driving past and people were walking past. Son's friend thought the woman could be dead but no one was stopping so I changed lanes and went round the roundabout to go back to her. There was blood all over her foot but we saw that she was breathing.
As I pulled up another car pulled up behind me and the occupants called an ambulance. Once we had stopped a crowd formed around her. Now it turned out that the woman was drunk and had not fallen down the steps but had passed out to go to sleep. However, given that she was blocking the steps and could have been badly injured it seemed incredible that passing pedestrians and traffic just ignored her.
Oh and I fell over on my drive once, broke my glasses and blood was dripping from my head and a man, a neighbour from along the road stared at me and just walked past. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I think some people are just so wrapped up in their own sad little world that anything that impacts negatively (in their eyes) on that world sends them into a rage.
Or they are just too selfish to care about other people.
I hope your knee isn't too badly injured.

I once escaped from a very bad situation at the age of 15 (and I looked younger). I walked the length of the high street in my town, with only one shoe, tears pouring down my face, bruises, blood, and utterly dishevelled. Not a single person stopped to ask if I was ok. I had just been really hurt and I looked it - and everyone just looked in the opposite direction. This is a pretty extreme example but one that has always stayed with me as evidence of how the kindness of strangers is, in fact, not to be relied upon.
Sorry about your accident
hope you are less shaken now! I have also had lots of experiences where strangers have been absolutely lovely, but it seems to be very varied. When I used to travel through London to and from university I never once carried my suitcase up a flight of stairs in a train or tube station - men always offered to do it. Yet someone can be obviously hurt or in distress and people just walk by. I don't get it. 0 -

I had the opposite experience, no one ever offered to help me but I find people on the tube to be unbelievably rude. I remember helping a boy of a similar age with his at a train station, he was foreign and I'm not entirely sure he knew what was happening! :rotfl:0 -
Ouch! I do hope you're ok.
I had a bit of a fall a few years ago at an organised race. I fell near a marshal, got up and asked him if he knew where I could get first aid. He completely ignored me. I wasn't asking him to do first aid on me; I just asking where I could see someone to clean me up. Thankfully, the next marshal (who is now my running coach) actually did help me.
When the above happened to me again last year, (different location) the marshals were fantastic. They had some water and tissue so I could clean myself up and radioed through to explain the situation.
There was an incident earlier this year where a woman had been kicked by a horse. Because we could see that several people were helping this woman, we carried on running - there seemed to be no point more people being around her, when clearly there was already enough people helping.Sealed pot challenge #232. Your thread reminded me of this clip a friend shared with me recently, about the arrogance of people when they are behind the wheel. Hope it brings a smile to your face and makes you feel a bit better.

A similar thing happened to me one day last week while walking the dog. I must have tripped over a paving flag and as I fell, the dog lead slipped from my hand.
Luckily I was with my husband and Barney (the dog) stayed put, and I wasn't badly hurt. Just shaken up a little, and very embarrassed!
But I can't believe how anyone could be so horrible and nasty when someone has had an accident.
Hope you're soon feeling better.0 -
I slipped off a kerb in the dark and rain a couple of months ago and fell into the road in front of a car. The car stopped and I thought they were going to see if I was OK, then it just reversed and drove off!
Should have been grateful it didn't run over me I suppose.0 -
Some years ago I tripped over and fell somewhat badly in the high street. It was busy so many nearby but no one helped; a lady said, "Yes it hurts doesn't it..."
The next day it might have been different the next day. It's luck of the draw...0
