Great topic :j and I'm glad you had such a great night out, Ed :)
Ed, love that you're forming a better idea of what the future should look like. Personally, I would be happy with a good night on the town once every three months, would definitely opt for rural living and simply travel to nearby cities for a little switch up in gears once in a while. Holidays would be little and often most years, but some years it would be nice to splash the cash and go for luxury.
Monthly great-night-out for me too, once my retirement finances are settled. As for travel, there are far-flung friends I haven't seen for ages, and plenty of new places to go, now that I mostly have my health back. The little-and-often travel always gets you more in touch with local living, and I adore that, it's fascinating, so that's what I prefer, as SSS also says sampling an alternative life, even renting out your own space (I've done that twice, recommended).

I definitely fancy 'live like a local', have already been mentally pricing apartments by the month in Ho Chi Minh city :)

Not at work today - car battery died in the supermarket yesterday and while I managed to get the car going again thanks to our wonderful emergency charger - I did manage to trip and !!!!!! my ankle :o

    Ouch ouch ouch!

Edit: £4.46 from TCB sent to savings, sig updated.

I really like the affordability criteria - naturally the Italian location I have in mind is not cheap. I am torn between mountains and lakes so would be looking at a combination of both and that of course means touristy. Somehow a small industrial town doesn't have the same appeal.

Sorry to hear you crocked your ankle. You must ensure you let it heal properly - I slipped on ice (cubes, nothing exciting!) in my early twenties and carried on after a couple of weeks, playing sport and hobbling around after every match - to find the ligaments are so badly degraded in my fifties that I routinely hobble when I first get up and start moving around - so please learn my lesson and heal. And, if you use a support (strapping or elastic), only do so when actually exercising (such as the walk to/from work) or your ankle will heal with an inherent weakness, because it healed "relying on a prop" if you see what I mean. That's another story (knees).

You might think "I don't do a lot of sport" but I recommend a one-off sports physio consultation for advice (mine is 30-year old wisdom, and techniques and advice change)

    heed Suffolk lass.
Mr Watty damaged an ankle, then twisted it a few more times and never let it heal properly. He is now wearing ankle boots nearly all the time to support it and has off late a weirdly swollen foot for no apparent reason but that I suspect is related.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Vietnam has become quite a tourist destination in the last few years - a mate of mine is going out to Singapore soon to visit his stepdaughter, and Vietnam was specifically mentioned as a place they could visit for a weekend away.

Sorry to hear about the ankle, Ed - hope it heals soon. I've no knowledge to impart, though :o

Vietnam was just an idea for an extended holiday to somewhere 'alien' ☺

That said, we'd best get saving - the nicest place where our existing wealth beats the median income is Georgia (the invaded by Russia one, not the Us state) :rotfl:
  • I spent sometime backpacking in my youth and I really enjoyed the sense of freedom and travelling at a slow pace. One of my favourite memories is cycling a bike along the banks of the Mekong in Vientiane in Laos (a possible alternative to Vietnam). I quite like the idea of taking a slow journey across Europe, then picking up the Trans-Siberian Railway to Beijing.

Back to work with a glorious purple foot :D

Got a lift to the bus, support bandage on and trainers for the extra width. The plan is basically to lose the shoes once I (eventually) get to my desk.

DD loved the soft toy Mrs E got her for Valentine's, a dead ringer for Jess from Postman Pat.
