I think the software requiring more than the tech can handle is key. On the one hand it's inevitable (and the tech should also follow on spec-wise so when you replace the laptop in 2 years rather than 5 it'll have better specs), on the other hand I see it as a bit of "keeping up with the Joneses". If you're used to everything being fast/easy on your machine you really notice/care when it slows down a bit and start looking around for a new machine. Your machine works, but you want a new one anyway.
DH and I both have 3-year old Macbook Airs that we got refurbished. (We bought in the US while visiting family but I think they were about £1k each.) They're still running strong for us, even though they're a "lite" machine (both in specs and weight). I'm hoping to keep them going another 2 years and then consider replacements. Sometimes I get frustrated by mine being sluggish with things, but restarting usually fixes it and gives me an excuse to go make a cup of tea.0 -
You can tell HS works in IT :rotfl:0

Yep
Ed, was I dreaming, or was it on here that someone (you?) said that a computer that could access the web was available for less than £100? Was that the Raspberry Pi?2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

Ha, yes, to be fair my needs for computing are probably far greater than the average person! My point was more that even DH and I (who do use/abuse our machines quite a bit) can make a machine last 5+ years. And, of course, not to be sucked in by the lure of shiny new things if what you have meets your needs.0 -

No, an actual computer
Am@zon had a Len0vo Chr0mebook for £99.95 + there was a £5 off voucher doing the rounds.
Life in IT:- Monday morning - cup of tea, chat to friends, server has been up for quite a while, so restart to avoid problems
- Tuesday - problem occurs. Cup of tea, chat to friends, restart different things, slowly, one of them must be to blame
- Wednesday - giant EMP pulse destroys half of the world's communication systems. Reassure president, cup of tea, conference call (chatting to lots of friends at once), restart what little remains of our shattered infrastructure :rotfl:
- Thursday - cup of tea, chat to friends, put off writing incident report 'til Friday!
