Our laptop is 5 years old. There is probably a pretty solid argument for replacing it with something that can be put away in a drawer at some point. As it stands, it hogs half of our kitchen table, which is less than ideal! Regardless, amazing that you can now buy laptops that weigh 1kg or so and can get you online, writing etc. for under £100

Hi, we are having shopping day in Glasgow tomorrow and I was wondering if you suggest somewhere nice to eat, probably a light lunch then a meal later for dinner. We are quite keen on staying away from a chain place at dinner unless we find somewhere with a really good deal.

I hope you are getting a bit more sleep now x

We are both arriving by train so yes to the city centre please. We like Thai and Indian but are happy to try anything.

My fave places to eat are in the west end. Unbiquitus chip is lovely and the Indian next door. I always taxi there in my visits so don't know how close it is to centre ;)

Tips from friendly colleague who is one of Glasgow's top food bloggers :)
    Cheap n cheerful
Brutti Compadres, Virginia Court (between Miller St and Virginia St), they do a set 3 course menu for £9 which includes a glass of wine. Usually something like soup, spag bol, ice-cream. If you don’t fancy that they do small plates of Mediterranean food.

    Chinese
Chop Chop, 43 Mitchell St. Not your typical Chinese as the dishes are from North-east China so lots of chilli, garlic, spring onion and plates of things like aubergine that you perhaps wouldn’t associate with China.

    Gluten-free, allergies and intolerances
Red Onion, 257 W Campbell St. The owner John Quigley often comes round to greet dinners, his wife is coeliac so he has a full gluten-free menu. Good for veg options and fussy eaters too.

    Indian
Dakhin, 89 Candleriggs. Souyh Indian cuisine, possibly the best Indian after Mother India in the west end

    Japanese
Nippon Kitchen, 53B W Nile St. Decent sushi and bento boxes in centre of town.

    Meat
Viva Brazil, 87-91 Bothwell St. Up to 17 (I think) different pieces of meat plus an unlimited buffet for around £20 each.

    Modern European
Guy’s, 24 Candleriggs, good quality meat dishes and well-priced. Has things like steak tartare and veal. Both pre-theatre and a la carte are great. The owner/chef Guy comes round and greets dinners.

Modern Scottish (AKA French-influenced Scottish food)
Schottishe - upstairs at Babbity Bowsters. 16 – 18 Blackfriars St. Not been here for years but it certainly used to be great. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Don’t think it opens for lunch but you can get pub grub in the pub at ground level.

    Pizza (authentic)
Paesano, 94 Miller St. Best pizza in Glasgow. A very soft base with minimal toppings so unlike most other pizzerias here and more like Naples. Affordable too, ice-cream portion is massive.

    Pizza (Scottish)
Republic Bier Halle, 7-9 Gordon St, Fried egg and Stornoway black pudding pizza on a thin crispy base so very different from Paesano. Good beer selection.

    Pop-up
Julie’s Street Kitchen, lane just off Gordon St next to Republic. Sells Malaysian food. Julie who runs it was a contestant on Masterchef 2014.

    Pub grub
MacGregors Pie & Ale Howff, 5 Blackfriars St. Pie & a pint for £6 – the pies are unusual and filling, i.e. all day breakfast, Thai veg curry or rabbit pie. Selections vary but they usually have a choice of around 10. All beers are Scottish craft brews. Sells real ale.

    Spanish
La Boca Tapas, 189 Hope St open 12-10pm. Most authentic tapas I’ve had in Glasgow. Owner used to live in Malaga

    Tucked away
Tabac. 10 Mitchell Lane. This was a great place for small plates but I just checked their website and it seems they do pizza and burgers now

:T I'm off to that Glasgow place next weekend Ed, might try to persuade my little coz to forego his regular haunts .

Thanks Ed. We had a change to our plans this morning when we realised there were more delays with train strikes. Mr AJM left Queen St at 1832 and won't be home in Fife until 2200  we ended up eating outside Buchanan Galleries in a chain place. I am going back with a work colleague so I am going to work through that list :D

Sounds like you have a great choice of restaurants in Glasgow. :)

Re. tablets / laptops: get an iPad. I'm not somebody that's particularly interested in technology but just before I went on holiday in May I bought an iPad pro and I can quite honestly say it's fantastic. So much so I dealt on an iPhone when I got back from holiday and when my laptop dies I'll be swapping it for a Mac. They are expensive but the interface is very user friendly and much more intuitive than Windows / Android.

They're certainly very popular Alex, but a little on the dear side! I'm a wee bit attached to Windows if I'm honest (side effect of working in IT?)

£102.32 added to Emergency Fund, which takes me past my target of £500, must have been a bit too easy! New target is £1,000 by the end of the year (currently at 53.90% of target).

*Edit: another £2.28 added, now at 54.13% of target.
