I think it will depend on the result of next week's vote. Unless you can predict the result then you can't predict what the market will do. Mind you even if you can predict the result, the markets may still do something unexpected.

As I see it LG, the result isn't all that important if I take a long term view.

Exit = widespread tumoil (or nothing)
Remain = relief rally (or nothing)

Basically, it would appear to be a FUD play, with the one known factor being that the index is cheaper than it was a fortnight ago. As I have no specific facts to suggest that it wasn't worth what it was a fortnight ago, it stands to reason (to me) that a further discount on an accidentally discounted product cannot be a bad thing.

Even if there are further falls, they won't hurt as much. Say I get £100 for £90. I'm going to be less concerned if it falls from £90 to £81 than if I'd bought the original £100 for £100, IYSWIM?

I think when you are buying a FTSE tracker your logic holds up. It is unlikely that the underlying worth of the companies held are all going to be permanently impaired by the result of the vote either way. So if you think the market is cheap you can buy and if it dips a bit oh well. If you think it has further to fall you can hang on but today or in a few days time you will still be better off than if you bought last week.

Definitely further to go, an order next Wednesday strikes me as a possible, should settle by lunch on the Thursday (when nerves should all be frazzled for the traders)!

I used to go to interminable seminars on technical trading, and there was one bloke whose advice I still remember: he just used the weekly charts, and when he saw a vague saucer shaped bottom, he'd buy - he was definitely a long term hold sort of person :D I never did it, but I did think it was interesting. And we *do* live in interesting times. I'm betting that the market will be flip flopping a bit Weds-Fri next week. Well, I'm *not* betting, but thats what I think :)

    • Used a chisel, hammer and crowbar to pry off some of the unsightly beading around our skirting boards. It will sound like a small thing, but this gains us 3" across/along the room! :j

3" makes all the difference Ed :T.

What? Oh behave you lot :rotfl:.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • I had to google FUD Ed. I'm now guessing you meant "fear uncertainty doubt", but the top result for me was an urbandictionary definition of a Scottish slang term. You being Edinburgher in Glasgow, well it's understandable why I would make the initial leap that that was what you meant... Had me a little confused for a moment there :)

PS: Any tips on the geegee's while we're at it? ;):p

Now that you mention it, I got banned from a bookies for picking 3 winners in a row last weekend :p

Not claiming to be Mystic Meg, but I've managed to make some well timed decisions that haven't done anything bad for our portfolio. Bought right into the teeth of the last few bad dips.
  • Heaven help us, a gambler on a lucky streak!

I jest of course, I know this isn't quite the same as betting it all on black... I'm poking fun at my own inability to act at these times of potential upside more than anything :o
