Thanks ed and al - I feel much more prepared now, and have now talked to oh about it, he thinks I am crazy!

House moves = expect none, only to downsize.
More children = going to sort this out long term.
Big holidays = budget - no holidays next year.
Job loss = savings + new job (don't think 'income protection' products are worth it)
Health loss = continue to be as healthy as possible ;)
Caring changes = I'm 1/2, oh is 1/4. His parents would be ok. My parents it would fall to me, my brother is a nightmare. This could be a big cost for me :(

How disappointing. Used MFP for another week, did 10k+ steps every day and stuck to my calories with one (sub 100 calorie) exception. Only lost 0.4lbs, as opposed to the 2.2lbs that I should have

£1.71 ET to cheer myself up :)

Edit the 2nd: apparently my cake settings were too high, fixed now, 300 less calories a day to play with
  • I blew it this week on MFP.
    TOO tired.

Perfectly understandable SHS, a lot of change for you at present.

Beat my calories for today thanks to a 4 mile jog, even after a mahoosive HM Greek salad, sides and dips meal (and a couple of beers) :)

£17.35 OPed (mostly MBs, although some small ETs as well).

Today I went to the supermarket, we got 3 quotes for our bathroom and went for family swimming (which was a bust, far too cold for some reason, poor DD chattering away until we left after only 15 minutes)

The quotes went from the ridiculous to the sublime. First one was £4k + tiles, second was £6k+ inc. tiles and third one was a rude ned who was in the house for all of 3 minutes, measured nothing and then explained in confused English that he only did fit, not supply and fit. Think we'll go with the £4k guy, he was the most intelligent of the bunch, made suggestions and is passing on all of his trade discount (unlike 2nd guy, who pretended like he didn't get any) :p

Managed to tear my rugby track pants, will need to sew the pocket up tomorrow.

Other than that, a pretty good day in the end. Off to zZzZzz on the couch.
  • Hello Ed,

You are very wise to be looking at plans to retire early. When I was in my forties I still adored my job and was ready to do it until they dragged me out. Once I hit fifty I changed my mind. Luckily we had been working to pay off the mortgage, just because I didn't want to pay lots of interest. But it had the added bonus that I could downsize my work. You never know, you may hit fifty and want to stay on doing whatever work you are doing then. But it will be amazing for you to have the choice.

    Good luck,

    Squirrel x
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
  • The trick with MFP is to under estimate your exercise calories and over estimate your intake (unless being really strict and measuring) as most people don't measure and can't judge a portion size.
I also measured things to start with, so now I chuck my porridge oats into the bowl but I know what the portion looks like (far smaller than you think).

I'm 1/4 but the only girl, and I live the nearest significantly. Daves 1/3 but they don't speak to 1 and the other I can't imagine being that helpful. I dread the sandwich years (caring for children and parents) as my parents in their 70's and Dave's mum is 80 next month but dad already mid 80's. We are both the youngest child.

I am using scales, that was one of the annoying things. In retrospect, it was just a case of me thinking I'd set weight loss at one thing and had actually set it at a far lower level. I'm being quite good with the exercise, my 7 day average is 13,920 steps, with a jog every 2 days. Jogging isn't very good yet, but I am forcing myself out and onwards :)

Going tile shopping this morning, think we've settled on a bathroom fitter. Gigantic (2kg+) casserole dish of carnitas in the oven for dinner + freezing (a mexican dish of confit pork made with lots of garlic, oregano, chilli, cinammon and coriander seed, shredded and then crisped off under the grill). Healthier than it sounds - the fat from the pork renders out and is drained off after cooking. Because oil is hydrophobic, it helps trap all the moisture in the meat which is good for flavours :j

£1.17 OPed, a wee ET to start the weekend. Topped up S&S ISA with £500 yesterday as everything is going south.

Awesome snow here this afternoon :)

Went grocery shopping and went a little crazy with on offer dishwasher tablets... I may have bought 288 at 20% off with my V1rgin Atlantic credit card for extra miles :o

Carnitas are delicious, managed to get enough for 10 portions + enough random jelly for a delicious porky sauce. Dishwasher currently doing overtime to get rid of some of the greasy dishes. Not that unhealthy in the grand scheme of things, but 100g is definitely a generous portion for one!

At least the tablets won't go off! You simply need somewhere dry to store them.

Home Bargains often have good offers on dishwasher tabs when your stash finally runs out.
