That sound sensible ..... but ......

Try telling that to folks in Orkney or Shetland or even in the North of Scotland.

Speaking of generations past - but still driving today - maybe we should just give out licences without any test at all - as they used to do in Ireland or Belgium until fairly recently. (That explains a lot in itself doesn't it - don't assume when in Ireland or Belgium that all the locals sat a test of any sort.)

Then it's the 'survival of the fittest' - sounds like that's what happens on the M25 at the moment anyway. ;)

Can well believe it having driven on Belgian roads.

Making motorway driving an additional test might be an option. Then means in places like Shetland with no motorways or people with no interest in motorway driving wouldn't need to take that part of it but couldn't use motorways.

Would be no different from learners not being able to use a motorway so can use alternatives.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    - This is causal during the morning work hour.
    - I intent to be Vin Diesel myself, moving in and out traffic like I'm the protagonist of Fast and Furious.
    - For me it is about the thrill.

I didn't say the middle lane guys actions are acceptable. But neither are yours.

You should stay in lane 1 and proceed cautiously. It's not undertaking if it's the result of naturally flowing traffic. When the guy in lane 2 sees a car passing to his left this will probably be much more effective than your method.

The only thing potentially unacceptable about my method is the fact that I occasionally flash my headlights. It's still correct overtaking procedure according to the highway code. Proceeding with caution or not, passing on the left is wrong unless the lane to the right is congested and traffic in the left lane is moving more quickly. If the lane to the right of the middle lane hog is available, then you should pass on the right.

I agree that flashing can be useful, but not the way that many use the facility- seemingly in an aggressive way

Perhaps I need to clarify a little.

I would flash lights if I come across someone in lane 2 who seems to be not interested in moving into lane 1.

But I'd only flash once and then, if I get no no response, I'd move out and overtake using lane 3.

Lots of drivers appear to be totally unaware of what is going on behind them

What I would not do is flash repeatedly and move up close behind them as I frequently see some others do.

I see that often on the M25 where impatient people, who are perhaps only travelling a couple of junctions, come upon a line of cars in lane 3 who are waiting for the lane to become clear, they appear in the mirror lights flashing like Blackpool illuminations and the cars in front have nowhere to go on the left due to volume of traffic.

The offender eventually zooms past only to cut across several lanes to get to their exit - just in time before missing it.

I try to avoid the M25 in the late afternoon.

I move into lane two behind the hogger, flash, give it a second or two and then move into lane three if it's apparent they're not going to move.

Not an aggressive driver, it's more just to say "Hey, I'm here, are you going to move into the right lane and let me pass?"

By clear, do you mean no vehicle in sight?
How about, another slower vehicle, perhaps two hundred metres farther up the first lane?

If I'm within about 5-10 seconds of overtaking the next vehicle I will hog lane two. Especially if there's a line of cars coming up behind me, because I don't want to move back into lane one and then get stuck there behind the slow moving vehicle.

There's no concrete answer, just apply common sense. I'm sure we've all seen those people doddering along in lane two when there's no cars for hundreds of metres..

    I do this ^^^

Especially if I'm already doing 70mph and leading a queue of traffic, I'm not about to move over and get stuck behind a slower moving vehicle just to let everyone else pass. If it's just a single car and it's obvious they're in a hurry regardless of speed limits I'll happily move over to let them pass then nip back out again to overtake the other vehicle(s).

I'm not going to selfishly impede another's progress as it could be an emergency. Not all people needed in an emergency are allowed to use a flashing light ;)

    Same here - sort of.

I'm only ever in one of the overtaking lanes if I'm either overtaking or will be overtaking imminently, so I consider it appropriate use of the lane. Anyone who doesn't like it can use lane three. If there's only two lanes I would happily move over for a car that I can see is travelling a lot faster than me.

Why do you have to go straight to the second stage?

the first stage ie coming off the gas is achieved buy pressing the button on the steering wheel

Not sure I see a downside and I use CC a lot

    Quite simple really.

For conventional driving, the first, and quickest, response is simply to lift one's foot off the gas.

To disengage cruise control by utilising a button, or switch, or somesuch, is essentially an alien action in driving terms.

Eye-to-foot, or, eye to finding a switch?

However, you lot crack on with it....obviously your skills of anticipation are far greater than mine....
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

No eye needs to "find" a switch, it's right there under your fingertip without even moving your hands from the steering wheel.

The exact same finger you use to switch the damn thing ON!!

And, if your'e using CC then your foot isn't ON the gas anyway. That's the whole point of using it *sigh*

My thumb actually sits on the cruise control button, no finding required.

I usually use the brake to slow down though.
