giffgaff new policy on unlimited mobile internet - use it and possibly lose it !

The same thing happened with the unlimited minutes goodybag, a small percentage of people abused it so it was removed.
Why should 0.2% of members be allowed to use disproportionate amounts of data that affect most other members who use the service sensibly.

Sounds fair enough
But then why is it classed as unlimited.
That's not unlimited.
For too long ill informed users have been pulled in by the promise of unlimited data and let down.
Sure Lyca give 10GB and that's more than enough. But it's not unlimited. Giff Gaff kick off heavy users... so it's not unlimited.
Yet all the networks use the word unlimited to describe their product.0 -

well we would have unlimited
however people sadly abuse those offerings
so to support networks and keep prices down,
some need controls put in place.
I have 'limited' home BB.
However I pay a package that's high enough I never get near those limits and enjoy fast speeds.0 -

Unlimited data is unlimited, excluding tethering.
As corf999 said the figures are only speculation, I've been with them for over 4 years and only know about the data tethering measures.
if the member is using a high amount of data maybe the automated system in place may suspect this as non legitimate usage and bar them for 30 minutes and an agent would need to remove that bar and confirm with the member if tethering did take place.0 -

I know people who have been kicked off Giff Gaff despite not tethering.
One user used 90GB in a month and was emailed a ban by Giff Gaff staff despite both Giff Gaff and the user knowing that the user was not tethering or using it for business use.
I guess the point i'm trying to make is be more open about the policies. Virgin and Lyca for example have a fair use policy where once you hit that limit your speeds are restricted to 2G speeds.
So for example it should be marketed as (for Virigin) 3.5GB data 3G data with unlimited 2G data. Lyca should market it as 10GB 4G/3G data with unlimited 2G data.
Giff Gaff should have their limits written up rather than claiming unlimited and then kicking off heavy users.
Three is the only network that has come close to getting it right with their "All You Can Eat" moniker which is truly unlimited and allows tethering on the One Plan.0 -
They (an others) have a FUP, and providing this is advised, the ASA is happy to accept 'Unlimited' as being an accurate description.
I think it's a cop-out - but they make they rules.0 -
I have seen threads on the giffgaff forums about 3gb/90gb limits, maybe that person had been barred in error if non tethering took place, I don't know all the case details.
I do know from my experience that giffgaff seem to be very transparent about their policies regarding data

I've just checked their t&c's and one of the clauses is
d) in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other giffgaff customers;
If giffgaff reasonably suspects you are not acting in accordance with the conditions of this clause, giffgaff reserves the right to impose standard charges, impose network protection controls (which may reduce your speed of transmission), remove a Bundle from your account or block access to the internet at any time, and/or bar or suspend your SIM Card from the Service, having first tried to contact you.0 -

Knowing the case details I can tell you both the user and Giff Gaff went back and forth. (the user was trying to prove a point) and eventually Giff Gaff said they'll have to cut him off because he used too much unlimited internet.
See the issue there.
Why call it unlimited when it's not. As buzby says, it's the ASA who have given authorisation for this loose term of unlimited that is now being thrown about by various MVNO's and some MNO's.0 -
just reading the ASA ruling on this from 2012
http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications/2012/8/giffgaff-Ltd/SHP_ADJ_192632.aspx
was this the 90gb person you are taking about?0
