In contrast our local transmitter was off for at least six weeks last year and Orange did not seem to have the slightest idea that anything was wrong.

Surely - you will never have just a 3G signal though ?
I would have thought that a 2G signal would be available if there was a 3G

No it will be like in the past you will now have 3g and 4g whereas before you will have had 2g and 3g

Try putting the sim in a 3g phone at home and you will find it will probably work then you can decide whether its worth buying a new phone so your wife can call and text at home
