are these smartcar CCTV wardens allowed to park on double yellow to gather "evidence"

Just witnessed a small incident.

Driver was parked on a double yellow on a relatively clear road - would have annoyed me if I was driving through the road though and I had to go onto the opposite side.

Driver was on the phone. A mobile CCTV smartcar parked up behind it. I alerted the driver and then driver drove off.

I found it hypocritical that the warden was parking on double yellow to ticket a driver than was on a double yellow. So I shouted at the warden "you can't park on the double yellow" his reply was "what's your problem" and that repated 5 times until I thought this is !!!!!! and just walked off.

Should have captured it on camera and complained to the council about double standards, do have the reg and time jotted down though..

In any case, are they allowed?

btw - I was a pedestrian in this incident.

They wouldnt be allowed to any more than anyone else. I doubt it invalidates any tickets they issue, and it shouldnt, but they themselves would be ticketed if they were caught too.

Really? I don't see any exception in the Road Traffic Regulation Act or the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions for them, nor any provision for such an exception to be made.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong if you'd care to give a reference?

its not that they are allowed.
its that no one is going issue or enforce a ticket against them.

i had a run in when the local Mayor parked on double yellow lines in our road to visit a temple.

i suggested that it sets a bad example and that the Mayor should know better. i complained to the council and their reply was that the mayor is obliged to follow the same rules as anyone else and the only reason he did not get a ticekt on the day was becasue parking restrictions had been temporary lifted in the specific place he was parking at the specific time he was parked there.

There was an incident I watch on youtube where clampers parked on double yellow to clamp another car on double yellow and then the police car stopped and told them clampers off and demanded that they move their van to a suitable place or the police was going to give the clampers a ticket.

Video is pretty old, searched by couldn't find it.

you answered your own question no they cant park on double yellows the whole point of the cctv car is to collect number plates of violations and issue tickets through post. if they are on foot they should park at a place that is legal to do so.

In some cities parking has been decriminalised so the police can't enforce parking.
