Landlords used to be able to get the housing benefit forcibly paid to them if the tenant had arrears and some people should have their HB paid straight to the landlords, but when I claimed in a shared house for a time it would have made things more complicated as my rent was only a portion and it didn't quite cover the rent anyway! So that's the reason they pay to the person, which is good if someone can manage finances, its just those that can't should get it paid direct.

This programme annoys me a bit, mostly because of the people. I live in London, as well as a lot of my friends. The friends that are starting families have decided to move a bit further out of London, but still within the zone system, as rent is obviously cheaper out there, which I understand. They know there are unaffordable places in London if you have a kid, I don't get people who want to stay in the same borough, especially if they haven't lived their all their life, you can get more for your money in other boroughs and if you have a kid surely you'll want to prioritise better house for the same money than the location. It's not like London doesn't have one of the best transport systems in the country!!

Well, I come from the East end, originally, but I cannot think of much worse than having to live there now!

I know London is expensive, and it is a source of amazement to me that areas we used to try and avoid, in the 70's, such as Hackney, Wapping, Peckham, Southwark etc., have now become desirable!

I can understand a born and bred Londoner not wanting to move North of the Watford Gap, but I don't understand why they don't want to move out to some of the cheaper suburbs.

And, as you say, many of those shown on this programme weren't even born in Britain, let alone in inner London, so they can have no emotional ties to the place.

A system of dispersal of people coming here to live might help - not everyone can continue to crowd into London.

However, this crisis has been 30 years in the making - too few affordable homes built, too many people settling in London, and a lack of action by various governments.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Since those applying for mortgages will now have their expenditure examined for any 'waste', maybe those applying for social housing should be subject to the same.

In 1970, we were turned down for a mortgage because we had a car loan.
