"Utility Investigation" - LCS are asking for our details.. should I?

Hi guys,

Came home today to a letter addressed to the Occupier/Landlord. Opened it to find it's from some company called LCS "Credit Management Investigations" and it says:

Utility Investigation

We are currently conducting an investigation into the utility supply at XXXXXXXX. In order to help progress with the investigation we would greatly appreciate you confirming the details below.

•Your name
•Date of occupancy to the address detailed
•Name of previous occupier if known
•Forwarding address of previous occupier
•Landlord’s name and telephone number
•Any other information deemed relevant to this enquiry

All information in strictest confidence, won’t be released to third parties blah blah blah.

What I assume this is about, is the fact that we bought this house last year, and had E-On sending various letters to the "Occupier" since then chasing up a debt for the month before we took legal ownership of the house.

I did call E-On a few times and they said to just ignore the letters; I even gave them the details of the estate agents; they said eventually the letters would stop - but now this!

What should I do? Should I give this company our details if it might finally stop them trying to chase this debt?

Any advice gratefully received!

I'd reply with I'm the legal owner ( no name ) and not with Eon, I have no debt with you or them

You need to locate previous owners

Ignore the above, it will end up your supply been cut off. Contact them via email or writting stating the date / read when your moved in, I take from your post your not paying another supplier?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Thanks... we are currently with Scottish Power, we switched from E-On pretty much as soon as we moved in.

So I should just send them an email saying the date we took ownership of the house, and what the meter reading was at the time? They haven't asked for a meter reading - should I provide it anyway? (That's assuming I can find them!! )

what date did you actually joint Scottish Power. It takes 5 weeks to switch supply they might be trying to find out if you were responsible form the date you moved in until the day you joined scottish power.

they should have told you to register with the current supplier until you actually switched over.
  • Hi,
we did register with E-On when we moved in, we have a final (paid) bill from them and everything...

I know that this matter relates to the period of 1 month before we bought the house, because E-On themselves have sent various letters to "The Occupier" stating as such.

I actually started a thread on it last year (sorry, I should have probably continued that one rather than start a new one - it's here

I was going to send the following as an email to LCS... what do you think? I would just like this matter to be closed :(

    Dear LCS,

I have spoken to E-On on several occasions regarding the matter to which I believe you refer. I have given them ALL of the information you request.

I purchased this property as of 04/07/14. I gave to E-On our opening readings - 27846 electricity & 14893 gas; we paid them what we owed, and they will be able to confirm this.

This matter relates to the period before we purchased the property. We do not know who the previous occupants were. E-On asked us the same thing. I gave them the name and address of the estate agents who managed the sale.

E-On have all the information you need from me.

I trust this will see the matter closed from my side.

    Kind regards
  • Love that letter from LCS, debt collectors bigging themselves up.

I'd probably change the second paragraph to simply:
We paid E-On what we owed, and they will be able to confirm this.

Oh, and they won't be coming round turning off your supply.
  • Thanks, I will do that. I have also emailed the E-On Company Representative who posts on these boards, as he helped out last year when we were getting the letters from E-On, and assured me that the matter would be ended...!

    Cheers for the advice!

What would you like to do if the advice you have already been provided with is not acceptable to you?

If you want to respond, I would be inclined to provide the company with confirmation of your name, and that you purchased the property on ...(insert appropriate date)

This information probably isn't secret anyway - it can be obtained from the land registry for £3.

Up to you if you want to give any further information, but you probably don't know it or it's not applicable anyway.
