Surely it makes sense to phone the water company up! What water company is it?
I am on a meter (Portsmouth Water, who are one of the cheapest) and pay 57.5p per cubic metre (1,000 litres) and £24 pa standing charge. I recommend you go online and find out what your charges are.
Water companies will generally repair a leak for free that is in between your meter and your property (though they do not actually have to as they only have to provide water to your boundary). If it's an internal leak it's up to you.
Also how do you use your water? If you have a power shower they will use loads of water, if you have a washing machine that is old or uses a lot of weater then that won't help, if you use a hosepipe a lot (watering the garden etc.) that uses loads of water.
Just phone the water company and ask for their advice......0 -

Just a thought. Is the whole bill for water used? My supplier puts 6 mths standing charge on in advance, but as I pay monthly, the charge is collected in instalments throughout the period.0

Also is it just for water supplied or does it include sewerage and drainage? For the two combined ( I gave two cos involved I pay £26 a month, which fo rone allowing for S/Cs would be £14 for a sole inhabitant per month.0

I will watch this post with interest! I am getting a water meter fitted next week, for the reason I live on my own and my water is £35 a month at the moment, so want to see if it makes any difference!!0
