I'm currently trying to decide whether putting some money aside for a break with DH is feasible (given the imminent house expenses). On one hand, I think it would do us good, and it'll be our anniversary in September, but on another, I'm loathe to spend whilst I have so much debt.
It's hard to justify sometimes when trying to pay down debt, but you have to do what's right for you and your sanity.
Sometimes a holiday from thinking about debt/ money all the time as well as getting away can refresh you and actually make you face it all again in a better way. If that makes sense?Debt 2008 - Approx £20k | April 2014 £6526 | 30 October 2015 DEBT FREE

Diary update overload. have just had a call from a car finance company who I'd lodged an enquiry with.
I wanted to find out if it would be worth submitting an application for the new job that's come up at work as I would need a car.
They gave me some figures for the scheme where you get a new car, pay it for 3 years then trade in for another new car (husband has been doing this for a year). I factored in the fuel costs and insurance (the lease scheme covers servicing and parts, it would be a new car so no MOT and it's a tiny car so tax free) and even with that I would.. assuming I got an interview and the job... still be over £200 a month better off.
Worth it.
Had better pull my finger out and finish my application tonight!Debt 2008 - Approx £20k | April 2014 £6526 | 30 October 2015 DEBT FREE

Can only assume the job application I've just submitted will be successful as last night's dream included being interviewed and then taken on a team building day by Louis Van Gaal.Debt 2008 - Approx £20k | April 2014 £6526 | 30 October 2015 DEBT FREE

Hey SP,
Totally get what you mean re: holiday break.
I'm impressed with the prophecy...fingers crossed that it's true (as long as you want the job that is!!)
There are loads of people at work who swear by lease cars. I can't do it because I do private work outside of job 1 and shedloads of miles so it works out too much, but for most people I think it's often a very good move.

I have been awake since 6 excited about an afternoon of car booting.
Husband is still in bed so am prowling the house and getting to the stage where if it's not nailed down, it's going for sale.

Husband has requested a lazy Sunday so car boot duty has been stood down.
Gives me a day to sort out more stuff. We have another one planned for Wednesday, which we'll still do and what we make is beer money for our short holiday next week.
There is one in Truro tomorrow that I might suggest, or one in Penzance on Tuesday as well.
Anything left after this week is going to the charity shop/ recycling so we can free up a corner of our utility room.
Sorted out the airing cupboard yesterday (am so rock and roll) and have as much to put in the Oxfam bin as went back in there. Lots of, gratefully received at the time, mis-matched duvet and pillow sets given to each of us when both of our first marriages broke up and a few rather sad looking towels. The Oxfam bin means anything that can't be sold in their shops will be sold in bulk to whatever the modern equivalent of a rag merchant is.
We have the two new so gorgeous and luxurious bedding sets bought to go with the new bed and I've kept one spare sheet/ duvet cover/ pillowcases for when we go camping or have to take our own bedding anywhere.Debt 2008 - Approx £20k | April 2014 £6526 | 30 October 2015 DEBT FREE

Well, I have made the decision to walk away from the £5k of 'my ex's half' of the PPI refund.
Yes, it is madness, but I think pursuing it further will only bring about more madness.
Basically he is, six years on, playing the high and mighty superior role and bringing up things I knew nothing about to do with our finances. Also he is disgusted that I could dare to think he might want the details of the loan to access the account.
This from the man who has never even attempted to pay me a penny of what he owed me = the figure he came up with, or half the divorce, which he agreed to pay and who took a full year to even give me his address (promised in the January, received in the December) so I could start the divorce (after we'd been separated for four and a half years and he had a three years old with his new partner). I can't imagine why I would think the worst!
So, this, this right here is why I'm calling it quits on the money. I am no longer subject to his passive-aggressive whims. I have a wonderful life and new husband and yes, money can bring about happiness through its opportunities and freedoms it brings, but it isn't the be all and end all.
Of course, I know having already received £5k makes it a bit easier for me, but I have to let it go (no, I'm going to break into 'Frozen' tunes).
In other news I've listened to 62 YNAB podcasts in the last two days, I may need professional help!

I probably won't explain it very well, but the principle is you have a month's worth of expenditure saved which you then put back into the budget so you're not living payday to payday. You could, in effect pay a month's bills without touching that month's income. They have tutorial videos on their website which you don't have to buy YNAB to watch.
So here's my next question...how do you build up a month in hand?!
I may well go check out the tutorials when I get home (if I remember!)
As for your ex difficulties, I applaud your decision to walk away. That takes some guts but ultimately, not being in any way at his leisure, whim or control must be worth more than that!

Hey SP,
Hopefully I'm not speaking out of turn, but in my mind it feels like you're sticking up two fingers firmly in his direction, before walking off into the sunset. I applaud your strength in what must be a difficult decision, but happiness and peace are worth more than £5000, as much as that is. You are doing great without it (the other £5000 was only a bonus in your existing good work) and b******* to idiot exes!
Hmm....a bit strong? Hope the positive support coming your way is evident as intended. I just can't stand people who think they can treat others so badly.

Thanks you guys. at least I know if I am completely barmy, I'm in good company!
Of course since I told him I'm dropping it all, he's completely changed his tune and sent a most apologetic email and wants to help me in any way he can. Bah! Husband is entirely unconvinced and I think he might be right (ssshhh, don't tell him I said so).
Giblet, in NO WAY too strong/ out of turn. I have been making up new swear worlds through the combination of assorted descriptive words for 'naughty bits' and animals. I like to think of it as advancing my creative side!Debt 2008 - Approx £20k | April 2014 £6526 | 30 October 2015 DEBT FREE
