I have a basic account as I am no longer able to work due to a health problem. I am now a stay at home wife with no income. I incurred a bank charge last oct and asked in the bank when would the charge hit my account. I paid the money in accordingly. She got it wrong and they are adding hundreds to the charges as I cant pay it. Its not my fault but they are not doing anything to resolve it. I darnt open letters anymore and my health is getting worse due to this. My husband is self employed and cant afford to pay as due to me we are down one salary. Any advice on how to resolve this. Surely they can check on the server when my acct was looked at in the branch. They can see I paid in the money for the charges

Normally you get a notice of all charges well in advance. It's either a paper document or a special section in your online banking. And if you haven't closed the account you were supposed to keep checking the paper or online statements instead of waiting for months.
Now, the only you can do is to follow their formal complaints procedure, then take the case to the FOS if needed: Complaints0 -

What was the charge for and did your payment address the root cause (e.g. overdraft) or just the charge itself? If they're adding hundreds to the charges then it sounds like you may have paid enough for the charge itself at the time but not enough to stop further charges accruing....0 -

Why is the bank "adding hundreds" to the charge?
I believe, the charge for a non-agreed overdraft is £5.00 per day, capped to 20 days maximum. Even if you paid the outstanding balance a few days late, that charge (number of days x 5.00) would have been advised and deducted from the account more than a month later. When was the (first) charge due and when did you actually pay it?
At this point you should have raised the fact that you have been given the wrong advice (or maybe you made an error and misheard the date). Did you do that and ask for the (second) charge to be dropped? Or has the account been overdrawn since the end of last year?0 -
I have a basic account
Do you really mean the Santander "Basic Account"? In which case, what are those charges? Looking at their Fees leaflet, it seems to be almost impossible to rack up charges on a Basic Account?
If it's not their Basic Account, which account do you have with them, and what are the charges for?0 -
