There will be a HDMI connector in the back of the amp though and thats how the signal should get to the TV not via SCART (which technically again is a socket shape as it can carry Composite, svideo and RGB signal formats)0

Ok, I wil stop mentioning the word Scart as its confusing things.InsideInsurance wrote: »There will be a HDMI connector in the back of the amp though and thats how the signal should get to the TV not via SCART (which technically again is a socket shape as it can carry Composite, svideo and RGB signal formats)
There is no socket in the back of the amp to put an HDMI lead into. This is the problem....and why I am asking how I get the DVD to work - what connects the DVD/Amp to the TV in the absence of being able to connect the HDMI lead....0 -
PS - What is svideo?InsideInsurance wrote: »There will be a HDMI connector in the back of the amp though and thats how the signal should get to the TV not via SCART (which technically again is a socket shape as it can carry Composite, svideo and RGB signal formats)0 -
PS - What is svideo?
svideo is even more confusing a term because it is both a socket shape and signal type. The original svideo sockets look like
and came in a with sound and without sound variety hence the different number of pins
The "problem" is that you have both a socket shape and what signal formats the source and target can communicate in over that cable type.
You can easily make a cable that has different shaped connectors on each end but unless the source and target can send/receive a common signal type over those socket types then it wont work and you end up need not just a cable that changes the socket types but a box of tricks that actually converts the signal itself too.
SCART for example can potentially carry 3 different signal types (composite, svideo and RGB). RCA can carry composite and component etc
You need to confirm the make/model of the DVD/Amp so that we can see what outputs it has. Ideally if you say the make/model of the TV too so we can see its inputs but that should be simpler as most have the same and its just the counts that vary.0 -
OMG - Never thought it would be so hard to watch a DVD - I hate technology - appreciate your help.
It is a Sony S-Master 5.1 full digital amplifier. At the back it has a S Video socket (DVD only) and a monitor out socket. Then various yellow, red, white Audio in and Audio out sockets; and several surround sockets with wires in them......... There is no hdmi or scart socket at all!
The TV is a Sharp Aqous.0 -

Is your issue that you don't want to, or can't, run another lead to the TV?
Because the TV probably has a composite input (yellow, red, white).
ETA: Is this a pic of the back of the unit? http://d3d71ba2asa5oz.cloudfront.net/23000103/images/sonysmaster5-%20(4).jpg
Looks like it's a choice between component or composite?
Component being best, if your TV has it.
Possibly the s-video might work as well?0 -
In order of preference:
1. Component (RGB RCA connectors),
2. S-Video (S-Video connector, as above),
3. Composite (yellow RCA connector).
I would expect the picture quality via Composite to be quite poor, by today's standards.0 -

Yes,m this is the back of my Amp/DVD player. The issue is:
(a) No scqart or HDMI socket so I am confused as never come across it
(b) Not sure what I need to run from the unit to the TV to make the DVD player work
(c) The TV is wall mounted and all wires hidden so it is not a simple case of connecting up wires
Can someone explain to me in plain English how best to get the DVD player to work and what I need to buy and what I need to connect?
Thanks0 -
Unfortunately both SMaster and Quos are product ranges not model numbers and so what exactly both have and support varies.
You're only going to get as good as the SMaster puts out so if the best connection it has is component, which the above photo suggests it is then this is ideally what you should connect up.
Certainly some Quos sets have a component in and as long as you can set up new cables then you just need a component cable (3 RCA plugs). If you cant put a new cable into the TV/ dont want it hanging there then you would need both a component cable and a convertor that will change the signal from analogue component to digital HDMI like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-Component-Converter-Supports-Lifetime/dp/B002C7CCJ6/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1398334749&sr=8-9 (no comment on the quality of this particular one)
The other possible option, again if that picture is correct of the rear of the box, is to buy a new DVD or BluRay box, plug it into the TV using the HDMI and then connect it to the amp using the optical input that it appears to have - just need to ensure the new DVD player has an optical out (most do)0 -

You bought these items from the prev owner - did they give any hint that they actually used them together?
It looks to me as though you need to buy a DVD/BR player with HDMI and audio outputs, direct HDMI to the TV, and direct Audio to the sound system0
