If you have solid walls in this cottage and want oil, I'd recommend looking into solid wall insulation. I'm in this type of property and it uses a serious amount of oil because the walls just absorb the heat. I can only afford to heat 2 rooms now and it takes forever to warm up. Also, it's nowhere near as good at keeping damp at bay as open fires/stoves are.

I'd swap for the wood burning stove anyday!
  • just to add to this, we looked a lot into the different options when we considered a house without any central heating or mains gas, and if you don't have much garden space for an oil tank, you can also get underground tanks put in if that is an option. There are a couple of stipulations, like it is unlikely to be suitable if you have a stream nearby as the water levels in the ground will be too high, but it might be worth exploring.

We've just moved now and have Oil Central Heating and are about to get our open fire replaced with a wood stove, and I think it will give the best of both worlds.

    good luck!
