    As above, different viewing conditions could be the cause - lighting, but also viewing angle, especially on cheaper or older LCD screens, can leave you with a poor picture.
    Also possible that there are different picture settings saved for each input, so go into the input you used for Freesat, check the contrast, colour setttings etc, then goto the Freeview tuner, and check if they're ALL the same.

    Freeview picture quality isnt very impressive on the low bit rate channels.

    While this is certainly true, I doubt the poster originally complaining of "washed out colours" hasn't tried all the channels.
