    I've not looked at the flight prices but I know even just on flights to the US the in pocket saving (eg after Ryanair placement flight and a hotel night) was still well over £200.

    Is it really though, or do you have to be extremely flexible and lucky to save anything like that? Whenever I've looked at that routing the savings have been very little or more expensive

    For example, I've just done a dummy booking 16-24 September, out of school holidays, not too soon, mid-week flights

    BA LHR-JFK - £518

    Aer Lingus DUB - JFK €517 = £424
    + STN - DUB £48
    + Premier Inn €72 = £59

    Total = £539

    So how do people manage to book these flights with amazing savings? Cos I've never once found one.

    Lots of time and patience (and some good websites that flag these deals)-and the fact I was a travel agent helps with inventive routings .

    At the moment I think there's a BA/Virgin sale on (may have finished yesterday not got time to look right now-I know it finishes before I get paid ;)) and there is little advantage - however two weeks ago the airlines were attacking the new services out of Norway and it was possible to buy tickets OSL LON LAX with BA for £305 return right over the summer and into the autumn. Well worth a Ryanair one way to Oslo and "missing" the LON OSL flight on your way back !

    Here's one I found today £290 return AMS JFK via HEL and the link http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mileage-run-deals/1568996-ib-ay-ams-jfk-518-364-ai-rt-5-1-cpm-10094-miles.html .

    You just need to look a bit harder Peachy ;) Holiday Pirates is worth keeping an eye on but most deals like this are shortlived and it's often a case of if you snooze you lose and it has gone if you take too long deciding.
