    Returning to the OP, and talking statisitics, here's my experience of Ryanair's on-time record;
in over 60 flights (mainly to Spain, Italy and to a lesser extent, France and once or twice to Ireland), I've experienced only one significant delay (over 5-10 mins) and that was about 2 hours. So consistent with their own boast about being one of Europe's most on-time airline!

However, on two occasions, my flight's been cancelled until later days; both times by factors outside Ryanair's control and both unlikely to affect you. One was due to the (almost annual) strike by French air traffic control (so no problem for you). The other was the precautionary closure for two days of all London airports, about 8-10 years ago, by the terrorist threat which subsequently heightened checks, prevented us taking liquids on board and gave employment to the army of security guards who now confiscate your shampoo and nail-clippers!

So again- statistically very unlikely to affect you.

How much of a gambler are you? I rarely back 60-1 odds but outsiders have come in

The OP wouldnt be booking a through ticket with ryanair but may be able to with aer lingus (I dont know if thats possible) if he can then that does indeed change things

If he did, he would then have a ticket from the UK to Australia and so would pay the higher tax (APD).

My first Ryanair flight was cancelled: not their fault, since it was caused by technical problems with Air Traffic Control. The next of their flights to my destination was fully booked, so I was offered space the following day. They did NOT make any attempt to put me on flights offered by other airlines... Since I was very short of time they put me on one of their flights to another destination in the same country later the same day, and it was only after I had agreed to this that they told me I would have a ten-hour wait!

So: things can and do go wrong from time to time.

Aer Lingus do not fly to Oz or anywhere near it. In fact their only long haul flights are to the USA, you are not thinking of flying that way to OZ are you? This means you must be making another connection in Europe or the Middle East which means a minimum of three flights from Dublin to Australia and then another one from the UK to Dublin? the savings would have to be massive to put yourself through all that. Begin by finding out who the flight from Dublin to OZ is actually with, is it Etihad by any chance in which case you need a minimum three hours connection time in Dublin!

I am a more seasoned traveller and frankly would/do pay good money to avoid connections now, especially inter-airline ones.

The plan is great on paper unless you have to go through multiple sets of security screening and baggage collection/check-in which will eat both time and life-force. Each time you have to take off your belt and shoes, put your phone, change and passport in your coat, open your toiletries, turn on your laptop, finish your water etc you get closer to insanity.

You see just how unevenly the rules and procedures are enforced around the world. Batteries in hold luggage/hand luggage/inside the camera, lighters, matches, toothpicks, leathermans but not penknives, toothpaste has to go inside/outside the clear plastic bag, can/can't take bottles of water etc. There is no real additional security, just a pain in the backside theatre of each airport's different rules.

Flying with a single airline (via Arabia or Asia I assume?) in economy will leave you feeling like you've been beaten up, adding another airline into the mix with a whole re-checkin and an extra hour out of your way will leave you feeling like you've played rugby against Wales and *then* been beaten up by each player in turn. Unless you're saving hundreds of pounds (once you consider the extra flight and hotel overnight) then do yourself a favour and spend as little time in the air and airports as you can. There's no glamour in flying long-haul economy, it is a wretched experience.

You need a minimum 3hrs connection.

Allow 2hrs for check-in for the longhaul flight and an absolute minimum of 1hr for disembarking the flight to Dublin, Passport control and collecting your luggage.

Personally, I'd book the flight before the one that allows you the 3hr connection time to allow for delays / cancellation.

I learned long ago that with long haul you pretty much get what you pay for.
I booked a trip to Zimbabwe and the flight included was a good deal less than with say BA. Why? It became apparent at the airport where I collected the tickets....Ah ha... the flight went:
London-Sophia. Off plane for several hours, Sophia-Malta (refuel) Malta-Lagos (hey, I was going to southern Africa, not west!!) and lastly Lagos - Harare.. and then I had an internal flight to Bulawayo. Of course the return flight was the same route in reverse but it was over booked x2 and I nearly didn't get back for work the next day.
    Never again!
After that I checked the routings the timings etc. Directly the long haul flight could be done in 12 hours.....I can't remember how long the horror above took.

If I understand this correctly, you can fly on Aer Lingus for both flights, in which case I would definitely do that.

You can check your luggage all the way through to Sydney when you start and I think (in theory) you should be better looked after, by a single airline, if delays occur. They have more motivation to sort your journey out as the buck cannot be passed. You would have a single person to deal with too, instead of potentially running between the airport desks of two airlines (which could be in different terminals.)

To the airline, you'd be going Birmingham-Sydney via Dublin, instead of Brum-Dublin and Dublin-Sydney.

When it goes wrong it can go very wrong.

Here is one as a cautionary tale.

I would be inclined to book with one airline, even if that makes it more expensive and no guarantee of help should things go wrong.

I've not looked at the flight prices but I know even just on flights to the US the in pocket saving (eg after Ryanair placement flight and a hotel night) was still well over £200.

As the OP is an inexperienced flyer in their own words -I'd suggest the overnight option with LOTS of spare time :)

Another spin on this is if your flight from Dublin routes you back through London again..... for simplicity I'll quote on a journey I actually did to the US but the principle is the same for other destinations.

Day 1 Travel to Gatwick - Put luggage into left luggage at Gatwick (approx £6) Fly to Dublin with Ryanair (seperate ticket ) Avoids Ryanair's bag charge
    Day in Dublin

Check in at Dublin for first leg of long haul flight (most fares allow you up to 24 hours between flights ) 21.00 departure from Dublin arr Gatwick 22.00. Collect luggage (or could do this next morning but you'll pay more and queues are longer)
Hotel at Gatwick -I like Yotel -it's IN the terminal so no shuttle buses to worry about and I've never paid more than £50 but it is VERY compact - bit like a cabin on a ferry but has TV wi-fi and a really good shower.

Next morning - stroll to check in desk - check in luggage -return to Yotel for shower and the coffee and pastry you picked up from Costa enroute from check in-watch a bit of TV then stroll through security to your gate completely relaxed and unflustered.

Usually if I'm travelling I have to catch the 4am train to get me to the airport and after 2 trains (and a bus if it's Heathrow) am fit for nothing by the time I get to the airport -so this option gets any trip off to a marvelous start with no stress about delays as I'm already at the airport 12 hours before departure- and am saving money too.

(Theoretically you could drive home and return the next morning but the hassle and airport parking don't usually make it cost effective unless you live somewhere like Croydon or Brighton and can use the train)

That would make the whole journey a flight originating in UK so OP would be making the saving for a flight originating in Ireland.
