stay the night before in Dublin, you will need the find a cheap airport hotel or something but that is what I am planning to do.

which airline have you got the flights with and how much are they just out of interest?

I've no idea on prices ex Dublin but is it going to work out that much cheaper once you factor overnight stays and hold luggage on Ryan Air (assuming you're not going to Australia with just hand luggage)?

I'm looking to go early October so fingers crossed no adverse weather but who knows in this country!
High winds can cause flight cancellations.

Iltismans Law of flight connections. First flight always delayed, second flight on time or early departure.

When it goes wrong it can go very wrong.

Here is one as a cautionary tale.

I would be inclined to book with one airline, even if that makes it more expensive and no guarantee of help should things go wrong.

Is it still the case that if you have all your flights booked on one coupon then in the event of a missed flight the airline will look after you (in some way)?

In the past I have missed a connection due to bad weather on a local flight and the airline put me up at a cheap hotel and rebooked the long haul for the next day. Another time I had a very long day at the airport- the only local flight got me in at around 10am and the long haul left at 9pm so I was given a voucher for lunch.
In both the above cases two different airlines were involved, internal and long haul were not the same carrier.

If the above posts persuade you to fly from London instead of Dublin, it may be worth getting to London the day before as well.
Then your holiday starts when you arrive in London and you are not fretting about missing the flight on the day.
I have nearly missed flights due to late trains and the amount of traffic on the M25.

I'd look at the Sydney flight lengths first and book the one with the shortest stopover then find a Dublin flight getting in the day before and enjoy a days sightseeing in Dublin.

This is not just from the point of missing the flight but that the 24 hour Sydney flight is long enough without adding the time getting to Dublin.
