Did you actually just go and weigh it? :rotfl:

And to be fair to the OP, Nationwide just asked me to use a card reader to view my statement online. I hope it's just because it's the first time I've done that, but for me, leaving my warm bed, retrieving the card reader from a box, getting the Nationwide card from another box, and looking up the PIN on my system (obviously disguised and not recognisable as a PIN), is unnecessary faff that I don't need when I just want to look at a PDF of what I can already see.

Don't you ever use your card in an ATM or to pay in a shop? I can remember PINs I use regularly - but not one in three months affairs

I'd rather have a card reader than use a mobile phone that I forgot to charge and last used in January

I had to pinch myself - why would anyone be stupid enough to BUY a card reader? Or even the batteries for them?

Maybe they dropped it down the toilet on the day they got it and are too embarrassed to ask the bank for another?

One thing that caught my eye however is this one:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kobil-Tan-Optimus-On-Line-Banking-Card-Reader-/171258484734

"The end user fills in an online form and sends it to the application server. A bar code from the server is displayed to confirm the data. As soon as the end user inserts his banking smart card into TAN Optimus Comfort and holds the reading device in front of the PC display the transaction details are shown. The user verifies the transaction details (on the display of the offline-device) and accepts the production of a one-time code."

This TAN card reader is completely useless in the UK since it wouldn't work with any UK bank.

Very interesting though that the German banks that use it actually sell it themselves - I hope this isn't the way card readers go in the UK! Could get expensive if they did.

If I told you I only use my nationwide account for 5% on £2500, would it blow your mind? ;)

Still an interesting idea though - I think I'd prefer it over the "Insert card, press Sign, enter PIN, enter reference, enter amount" to get the code. You could just insert the card, hold it up to the screen and then type in the code displayed. Could be used for Verified by Visa security as well. Better than having to open my password manager every time.

As long as the first one was free I wouldn't mind. If people lose them or abuse them then they should be forced to pay for a second, maybe at cost price.

In that case you'll never take the card out of the house so why not change the PIN to the same as a card you regularly use, so you'll remember it?

You can always login to Nationwide with memorable information. If you make a payment which asks you to authorise with a card reader you can instead ring them up and request to make the payment over the phone.

Personally, since all card readers are pretty much the same, I have a Barclays PIN Sentry at home, a co-op reader at work and a Nationwide reader in the car, so I'm never very far without one, and if one breaks, I can just grab another :)
I have no problems with Nationwide using memorable information
There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:
WARNING ! May go silent for unfriendly replies
Please excuse me Spell it MOST times :o

    I raise you:
    Nationwide 50g - unused.
    Natwest 50g - used.

But the Natwest feels lighter

I think this half proves my 1st conclusion :p

    Nationwide 50g
    Co-op 51g
    NatWest 52g (not used)
    Tesco 52g (not used)

    Conclusions:
1 Card readers lose weight the more you use them
    2 I should get out more :p

You can get absolute 'bargains' on eBay:

I had to pinch myself - why would anyone be stupid enough to BUY a card reader? Or even the batteries for them?

The Co-op one is an absolute snip at only £49.99 :rotfl:

The Barclays one weighs more because it's a higher quality device :)

That's all I use mine for as well.

I've set up standing orders between my Nationwide and TSB accounts so all I need to do is once a month skim off the interest into my Vantage account.

Also these card readers are a good source of CR2016 batteries.

Need a CR2016 battery? call Nationwide and tell them it got dropped in the toilet.

Got to weigh in with my rarely used Coop @ 51g. But the joker in the pack must be my Ulster Bank one with 49g. Used just the once. Was that Fred The Shred's plan all along, to surreptitiously leave RBS Group customers with an underweight card reader? All customers should be allowed the same weight, surely. How much compensation can I ask for?
