Now you've got me started and I've weighed the other one
    Barclays - 61g
    Nationwide - 52g

At least I know which one to take on holiday now

You should try using the Nationwide one more frequently so it will weigh less when you go on holiday :D

I know Barclays are pushing their mobile app but I don't want to access banking on a smartphone, only on PCs. Thanks.

Assuming that you are lugging your mobile phone wherever you go, how about text messages? MetroBank sends security codes to your mobile phone to be entered online for certain transactions. (Fine until you are in an area with no reception / your phone battery goes dead / your phone is lost or stolen etc. )

Halifax .....They pay you £5 each month your balance is in credit.
well, it is not quite that simple, is it. But it's nothing to do with card readers, anyway - separate thread about Halifax Reward accounts.

    Nationwide 50g
    Co-op 51g
    NatWest 52g (not used)
    Tesco 52g (not used)

    Conclusions:
1 Card readers lose weight the more you use them
    2 I should get out more :p

Have the unused ones still got the small bit of plastic over the battery terminal that is removed before use?

lol no, but they are both boxed (inside the outer box and plastic moulded tray) and come with Online/Internet banking cards. Could be collector's items ;)

    I raise you:
    Nationwide 50g - unused.
    Natwest 50g - used.

But the Natwest feels lighter

My personal experience and opinion of my accounts.

Barclays. Card reader used to be mandatory, long winded and awful to log in but now you can chose to use memorable information. Still long winded login even without reader but better.

Santander: No card reader but will send text codes where they deem necessary to authenticate.

NatWest. No card reader to log in but mandatory for new payees etc.

Halifax. No card reader, fastest and best login of them all by far and will just need to receive an automated call to your mobile or land line to setup new payees etc.
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

You can get absolute 'bargains' on eBay:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XCard+reader+bank&_nkw=Card+reader+bank&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I had to pinch myself - why would anyone be stupid enough to BUY a card reader? Or even the batteries for them?
  • Urrgh i hate the card readers with nationwide! Such a relief to find my new accounts with TSB and Santander don't require one.

Santander require you to have access to a mobile phone to use online banking if you want to do certain things like set-up new payee

You can also set up new payees in branch (personal accounts only)
