Problems of weight loss

I have a problem with my thyroid, it has pretty well packed up. It did cause me problems, including weight gain, but as soon as I was diagnosed and got my thyroxine dose right it was all fine. I guess I am lucky as if you are going to get a chronic condition that is potentially serious it is good to have one that is controlled well with one tablet a day.
There are lots of chronic conditions which modern medicine is fabulous at controlling in many.
. Not all thyroid patients find it so easy, hypothyroid runs in my maternal family and some have had a long time to diagnosis because they belief they have irregular function, and some have had goitre growth significantly before poor bloods, yet the symptoms do seem to have resolved with surgery and thyroxine.
. I think the majority of thyroid cases SHOULD be easy to control if well monitored.
Calcium awareness is so important to those of us with endocrine issues, as I am sure you have been well guided now
.
Bone density is anyway I think I remember, one of those things suffering with poor diet ( including obesity) and food choices, lack of concussive exercise and other lifestyle changes.
Bloody complicated, this staying alive well!!:rotfl:0 -
Bone density can be improved with regular exercise (as well as diet). It's vitally important for women 40+ yrs old. And increased muscle mass will boost metabolism therefore reduce body fat. A win win situation. You just need to get active.
Vigorous walking (walking is far better than jogging/running). Lifting weights even if from a chair (for those with reduced immobility), dance classes such as Zumba for the active folks, swimming etc etc.
You need to keep active to ensure good health

Which is tougher on those who have trouble keeping active:(0 -

True, but let me come back to you on that as I know you have unique health issues. Although saying that, I would need to know the full extent of medical/health issues etc which would involve a consultation and perhaps medical advice, all of which isn't allowed on here

There are lots of ways to keep active even if immobile. My son has developed an extensive range of chair-based exercises for the immobile but he's not here right now to pick his brains. Failing that, youtube is a fantastic resource for find whatever you need

I seem to remember you were a vet or similar? Have I confused you with someone else? I'm still human! :rotfl:0 -

No, I was a vet and now a nutritionist (registered) so I can fully account for your confusion
It's when I start commenting on both subjects simultaneously the confusion tends to occur
ETA: I do still wear both hats to an extent. I'm no longer a practising Veterinary Surgeon but I do still have quite an involvement in that area. But I am now a qualified Nutritionist, albeit on mostly a self-employed/freelance basis.
I'm hoping to expand this side of my business as and when I can, relative to my own ill health.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

I had trouble getting a diagnosis, my doctor kept telling me I was depressed. By the time I got the test I had been suffering for at least four years, it is hard to be exact as I am sure you understand if you have it in the family.. Taking thyroxine was like a miracle, it took a few months to get me up to the right dose as my level was so low but I have been stable for 3 years, perhaps it is an advantage that my levels are so low that they can't go much lower so my dose doesn't need changing. I know some people can be a bit up and down. I think I could have much worse things, well I know I could and your situation sounds more involved. Good luck with it.Sell £1500

I'm so glad it was sorted. Four years is a long time to wait for a blood test
. Glad you are sorted now! 0 -
I'm pleased to say, I am losing weight, sloooowly, but then it didn't go on overnight so will not come off overnight either.
I've recently had DH in hospital, a flare-up of infection in his 4th knee replacement, been in hospital for a week on IV antibiotics. Apart from one or two mini pork pies bought at the WHSmith shop in the hospital foyer, I haven't gone mad with anything not in my plan. It would have been very easy, and I imagine some people would have done, gone mad with sweet things, but I didn't. We tried to get away from the ward when possible - last Sunday afternoon we went to the Sunday evening service in the hospital chapel, and then another 2 days he met me downstairs in the Costa Coffee shop. In between all the sweet things on sale there and in the WHSmith shop opposite, it would have been the easiest thing in the world to say 'oh s*d it, I need comfort' but my only comfort food really is a tin of Heinz tomato soup!
Am very pleased that the weight loss is continuing. I don't care how slow it is just as long as it is heading in the right direction.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.
Before I found wisdom, I became old.0
