Thank you for this.
The proof, it would seem, is in the pudding. I am losing weight.
So, therefore, I shall keep on with this until the next time we go away, which will be Saturday 24th May.
We've just had what we call 'eggy-onion' for breakfast. That's one red onion, chopped and softened in a little olive oil, combined with scrambled eggs, 4 between the 2 of us. I had one slice of wholemeal toast with English butter. Oh, and the scrambled eggs include a spoonful of creme fraiche, full fat. This will all keep me going for a long time. I don't need to snack.
I agree with Chameleon about breakfast cereals. We've rarely had them. Mostly our breakfasts include eggs in some form or other, sometimes with bacon, sometimes as a ham omelette.
I've been in the habit of going to a local gym which has a pool, for aqua-aerobics. I got a bit bored with it, however. I'll probably join another gym which is closer and get on their machines. Trouble is, I can't climb on to some of the machines and don't like the treadmill because the feeling of the floor running away from me is scary. However, no reason why I can't do some weights at home. I have 2 x 1 kg weights here. There's also a local 'stretch and tone' class run by the people who do bootcamp and I can go to that.
About SW, it's 'horses for courses'. My SD has lost a huge amount of weight with them. She tried to explain it to me but I couldn't get my head around it. It works for her, fine. Not for me. There is an awful lot of what almost amounts to paranoia about 'fat' - dietary fat, that is. We have been brainwashed. Both SW and WW seem to assume the need for 'treats' and snacks. We don't do them.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

It always seems to be people who are almost permanently on diets who tell us how good or bad something is. Perhaps we should ask people who seem to have been slim their whole lives just by living their life. Might be more informative.Sell £1500

Not all of us are on diets. In fact I never diet. I simply adjust my food intake relative to the level of activity I'm undertaking. I also don't view MC's new "diet" as an actual diet either. Most people eat far more carbohydrates than they actually need so cutting these back in favour of more protein and fat is actually a healthy approach to eating and one which can/should be adopted as a lifestyle change and not viewed as a temporary diet in order to lose weight.
I know the book and author she's reading and his approach to healthy eating is very sensible in my (expert) opinion.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
If you can find me someone who has been 'slim their whole life just by living their life' then fine, I will listen to them. It is increasingly difficult to find such a person. I do know a few - my stepdaughter-in-law and her daughters. It seems there is genetics involved there. Those girls' daddy has to battle with weight just like his Dad, my DH, and he eats the same as his wife, so their slimness is from their mum. It also makes a difference being very young and very active. You can see it with many retired athletes, rugby players etc what happens when their career is ended.
Thank you, Chameleon. Many people are, as you say, encouraged to eat far more carbohydrates than they need. The widespread habit of 'snacking' contributes to this. TV ads in the evening are often geared to food, chocolate, ice-cream, you name it. People talk of getting 'the munchies' while watching TV in the evenings. Another contributory factor is the habit of eating not at a table, but on a sofa in front of the TV. There is research on the effects of these habits. In fact, there is a lot of modern research because of what has been called the 'obesity epidemic'. It's hardly an epidemic in the sense of an infectious disease, but it's very widespread.
I have searched for a long time for something that works for me. I'll stick with it. There are very good medical reasons why I should reduce my weight and keep it under control. It's not just vanity.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Most people that have been slim their whole lives have been so because of genetics. Not really very much use to anybody else. Although I did see a study of a pair of twins, one fat, one thin. Same genetics but the thin one fidgeted all the time.0 -

Really? Funny because all my slim friends are so because they are just very careful about their weight.
I am in my mid 40s and have never gained/lost more than 1 stone in my life despite some ups and downs within that range. People would say that I have always been slim even if sometimes a bit less than others. The reason is because to me, the alarm bell start ringing when I get to 1/2 a stone over the weight I feel comfortable with. That's because anything more and i have to consider serious dieting and that I refuse to do. Instead, I know it means I need to be a bit more careful about what I eat, but more importantly how much I eat each day. I have already started to lose the weight, and that's with me just eating a bar of white chocolate!
I have seen a few friends and colleagues losing weight through diet and putting it all back on, and that's because they look at their weight management as whole of nothing. Once they start to put some weight on, they go into denial mode, stop weighing themselves, go shopping for new clothes and put the old ones away, and it is only once they've put on 2 stones or more than they think they need to do something about it.
No,most slim people are not slim because they are genetically lucky, they are slim because they consider their weight as something that needs to always be watched and managed. Some have it in such a habit that they need to make little adjustments, others need to be much more watchful.0 -

Completely agree. I'm slim but not genetically blessed with waif like genes either.
I realised a long time ago that exercise needs to be a big part of my life if I was going to be happy with my body. There's no way I could stay slim by restricting calories alone.0 -
You asked a question yet any advice you have been given you seem to knock it down0

And most of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances who have been slim all their lives don't have to be careful about their weight. Most, but not all, are men, if that makes a difference.
I do know several people who used to be larger who are now relatively slim who do maintain their lower weight long term by managing their diets. I would put myself and Mrs G in that category.0 -
I don't think it is always genetics, sometimes perhaps, but you only have to watch something like Secret Eaters to realise that some people think they don't eat as much as they do.
I find most of the slim people I know, I mean people who have never dieted, eat a variety of food and listen to their bodies.
