......I have also NEVER claimed ever on home, car or motorcycle insurance which I have held for more than 8 years (8 year no claims on car, 7 on bike on a separate policy)

The motorcycle theft you mention still should (must) be disclosed to all insurers (irrespective of whether or not you made a claim for it) when giving details of your claims history.

You will have to disclose your losses/claims for whatever period is required (usually the previous 3/5 years).

i feel like the voided policy is still punitive even if I have been in error. it wasnt intentional, and I think its going to cost me £1,000s of pounds for insurance going forward and disclose this voided policy .. for how long??

Forever unfortunately. You need to get them to uncancel.

Unfortunately you will need to declare the cancelled / voided policy forever, this will also apply to your car insurance and if your partner is a joint policyholder to their policies.

Don't forget you will need to declare the storm damage.

Try whoever provides home insurance for your mortgage provider as they have wider acceptance than normal for mortgage holders (I'm hoping this is not Bradford & Bingley).

    Also try https://www.bureauinsure.co.uk

I would also recommend you try local brokers but avoid Swintons.

It's well worth you making an "Official Complaint" to L&G, this will cost you nothing and there's a chance it might resolve the matter. L&G are a fair company and are proud to keep their founders original principles.

When making a complaint keep it polite and concise, explain the circumstances of the theft incident and why you did not understand it should have been declared due to it affecting the bike and not your home at the time of taking the cover. They might not be aware of the full circumstances. It may be the case that they would have accepted you with the theft claim but assumed due to the proximity of the incident and when you took out cover that you deliberately misled them.

(If they felt you had deliberately misled them they can void the policy whether or not they would have accepted the theft claim)

Do not be tempted to elaborate the circumstances, stick to the facts.

I would not hold your breath, but there's a chance it may work and they may not be aware of the full facts.

Should you not be happy with their response to the Official Complaint, which they have eight weeks to respond to then you can then go onto the Ombudsman which will cost you nothing but the Ombudsman takes a long long time to resolve matters

It depends on what questions they ask when you take out cover and at any subsequent renewals.

I'm not sure on the life insurance, one of the IFA's who post on here will be able to answer regarding life insurance.

All policies that question if you've had insurance cancelled, so motor insurance will definitely be one of them.
Unfortunately although it's harsh, insurers don't want customers who 'forget' claims, as they could be a much higher liability than calculated from the detailed provided.

It's a lesson in making sure you've disclosed everything, that's for sure!
  • You need to get on to the Ombudsman. If you don't this cancellation will put up your insurance forever.

ill be writing a formal complaint today so I can take it to the ombudsman next.

re-reading the letter is specifically says "claims" and I did not have any at the point - so the disclosure of the event (unrelated motorcycle theft for home insurance??) doesnt seem to be the trigger.

Its going to be a long fight I am sure, and they have such power over you it feels unfair and difficult to get your opinion across.

I guess in the meantime I need home insurance to cover the gap till I find out what is going to happen.

What do you mean "letter" ?

The Insurers concern is whether or not you answered the question they asked about any claims and / or losses on the quote application you made.

Did they ask about losses or incidents when you applied for the cover?

If you're refering to the letter they sent when they voided your policy, don't forget at that time you had actually made a claim although that is irrelevant as it what you were asked and what the situation was when you applied for the cover.

Please think about your situation, it's important that any complaint is properly thought out and submitted. If you go in all guns blazes about a letter they sent after they discovered your claim referring to claims you will give them a very easy option of responding to your complaint
