I've got to say that you're on the back foot a bit here. The Insurer is sure to be sceptical over the reasons why you failed to disclose an incident which only happened the day before you got their quote.

Not so sure. Monday 20th could only be January 2014 so the burglary was 2 months previous. The burglary claim was then made more than 2 months after it happened. Clarification on dates could be important.

If via moneysupermarket the question they ask about claims is

"In the past 5 years, have you or anyone living at the property made any home insurance claims or suffered any losses or damage, whether insured or not?"

With this as the "Help" explanation

"You should include any incidents that resulted in damage to property, items being stolen or injury to other people. You should include these incidents whether or not you made a claim, and whether or not you were paid for that claim. Examples of incidents that insurers need to know about are: any claim, burglary, vandalism, fire, water or storm damage."

Was broken into on the 19th nov (actually dont know the date but this is when I got back from a weekend away)

reported to the police that day, at that point it seemed like they broke in solely to get the keys to steal my motorcycle which was SORN and therefore not insured. this is in the original police report.

20th nov arrived at work, saw mail from money supermarket from quotes I had requested as insurance was expiring 5th dec, immediately bought following year policy from bradford and bingley

did not really connect the dots, motorcycle theft/home insurance didnt think I needed to say anything, form was prefilled - accepted quote.

got the B&B policy documents, noticed that keys replacement was part of the policy, wife phoned the old insurer to ask for lock change which they did.

later that week, realised that they had gotten some other items - called the police to notify them, then the insurance company

total payout so far is less than £600 pounds, claim is ongoing and they refused to pay for most 2/3 items taken (helmet and gloves are accessories not contents apparently).

then after the storms in london late feb-ish, tried to make a claim in march, I fully disclosed the claim which was ongoing - did not try to hide it and it wasnt them who discovered it, and from there on they have been reviewing it and now sent the cancellation.

I am really stressing, I dont think I have done anything wrong, I realize the timing looks bad from their point of view but I did disclose when asked and I think their response is entirely disproportionate and punitive.

When you find a new insurer apart from the robbery you must also disclose the storm damage too. (This will be on your history along with the cancellation)

    Yes aware of this now.

I have also NEVER claimed ever on home, car or motorcycle insurance which I have held for more than 8 years (8 year no claims on car, 7 on bike on a separate policy)

If L&G would not have accepted you as a client had you declared to break in claim then they are entitled to void the policy from inception.

You purchased cover with L&G via BISL.

The L&G direct website has this

"YOU, OR ANYONE LIVING WITH YOU, HAVE NOT:

Had any home insurance claims or losses, whether insured or not, in the last 12 months."

If you do not qualify with the above they cannot quote you online, you have to call for a quote.

The letter L&G sent you does it say they cancelled your policy and if so from what date or did they void your policy from the start date?

Did they refund part of your premiums or have they refunded the entire premium?

In the letter they are saying its canceled from the beginning and refunding the entire premium.

The fact that it was my motorcycle and no loss from the home doesnt count?

This means they are saying the policy (contract) was null and void so did not exist hence the refund of your premium. It sounds like they would not have covered you had you told them of the break in when you arranged cover.

Your house was broken into and as at the time you did not make a claim but you experienced a "Loss" as you needed to replace your keys and I assume repair the door or window they gained entry through.

I assume you reported the incident to the police at the time, what items did you report as being damaged / lost?

mainly the motorcycle, but keys as well. at the time we didnt know how they got in. they got in through a window but it was not broken, it was a second floor window that they forced open.

I guess the keys only really, but that is a loss.
