Tesco shares...

The perception is that M&S products are superior and in some cases that's a fair comment. But you pay a hefty premium for that. On the other hand M&S ginger nuts taste to me like Tesco's value brand, but Tesco's value brand is much better value! There's a certain snob value to shopping at M&S. Cherry picking is the best option. The big supermarkets all know each others prices anyway and what actually exists is a nice, cosy cartel arrangement between them.Glen_Clark wrote: »Why do people shop at M&S when they can get similar stuff at Primark for half the price?
Tesco have a far bigger range than Aldi, so even where they were more expensive, busy people would go there to get everything in one trip.0 -

Most likely as the lines come out the same factory.
What was the now defunct Northern Foods company makes virtually all Pizzas that sit on supermarket shelves for example. Only difference between premium products and valued lines being the quantity and quality of ingredients. So much is down to brand perception.0 -
Yes well I'm sure that Tesco's don't have a baked bean factory anywhere. Yes of course, brand perception is big business. Personally I don't rate Heinz beans, despite their high profile. They are overpriced. The reason I don't like them is becuase they don't taste as good as once they did. The reason for that is that they have reduced the sugar content and I have a sweet tooth. So their product now contains less of the sugar ingredient. yet the price for Heinz beans has effectivey rocketed.Thrugelmir wrote: »Most likely as the lines come out the same factory.

4 pints of milk at Aldi is 95p now (used to be £1 at Aldi before Tesco reduced their price to 4 pints for £1)
I prefer the fruit and veg from Aldi over Tesco, IMO its both fresher and better tasting. I shop at Lidl/Tesco/Lidl/Asda and find majority of items are cheaper at Lidl/Aldi but then you do get deals at Tesco and Asda too, all depends what you're after.
Its not just the poor that are leaving Tesco to go to Aldi/Lidl - unless the posh motors I see in my local Aldi car park are all on HP.
Even though I own Tesco shares I still do the majority of my grocery shopping at Aldi - if it was just for the cost saving I would probably stick with Tesco but I find the quality of the items I buy at Aldi are better quality and last longer too.Never let the perfume of the premium overpower the odour of the risk0 -

You're kind of intimating here that there exists Tesco only and Aldi only farms. That seems to me to be highly unlikely. What can make a banana from Tesco taste any different from one from Aldi?0 -

No not Tesco only or Aldi only farms (not that I'm aware), they most probably source from different suppliers hence the difference in taste (although Morrison's do have their own farm/abattoir).
For example the satsumas/clementine's I find are sweeter/juicer at Aldi than the ones I used to get from Tesco and they last longer. Mackerel fillets (~200g for £2.60 at Tesco) same ones at Aldi are £1.59, both have near enough identical packaging and both caught in the North/East Atlantic, Aldi ones usually have a longer use by date. Its not just the price the Aldi mackerel fillets have less bones left in them.Never let the perfume of the premium overpower the odour of the risk0 -
Seems I was out of date on that.4 pints of milk at Aldi is 95p now (used to be £1 at Aldi before Tesco reduced their price to 4 pints for £1)
Shows how difficult it is to compare prices.
Regarding expensive cars in Aldi Car park there are always a few exceptions to the rule though. I am talking about the recent shift from Tesco to Aldi, which coincides with the poor getting poorer, not with changes at Tesco.“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0 -
Didn't Neil Woodford sell all his Tesco shares from IPHI and IPI this time last year? My local Extra is full of chavs in sportswear or bare chested in the summer. I like them for delivery though0

Well I can see Aldi/Lidl taking over a few Co op sites and giving the big 4 more competition. The Co op is still rich with property assets, Asset stripping hedge funds have already taken 70% of the bank and seem to be talking its value down. Is this so they can buy the rest cheaper?“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0

Primark is doing far better than m&s.
Tesco has got a problem in that it is the most hated of supermarkets. A few years ago I complained about a thread on the grabbit board in which posters were boasting about how they were profitting by abusing the tesco misprice policy (you buy something you know is mispriced, preferable high value, and get the item free and or the difference back - I think Tesco have changed it now). The response from posters was: who cares? It's Tesco!"fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." (Bertrand Russell)0
