I agree. Last car I bought, the salesman was giving me the waffle and hard sale and I just said firmly... "start that nonsense and I'm walking out the door with my money". He tried to sell me nothing else, stopped pestering me and only spoke when he was spoken to.
Just have to be firm and put them in their place. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
They can only pressurise you if you let them. Just be non commital, and say exactly what you require.
Funny, i would be the reverse. I let the salesman know what the parameters are that i am working within - when i will make a decision, what would make me commit today, what my expectations are, etc.
Then i hammer out a deal.0 -
I know there are a lot of ex-white goods sales jockeys in the car trade now, but don't confuse a real salesman, one who asks about you and how you are going to really use the car, with an ankle grabber on commission.0

Hubby and I were shopping for our first car last week. We went to four dealers in all.
Dealer one said hello, asked if we needed anything, then left us to it. The cars were in a terrible state and were parked so close they were damaging each other. We walked away.
Dealer two, I asked about a car I had seen on their website, and two I had seen in their lot. The one I'd seen online was sold. His knowledge about the ones on the forecourt was zero as they weren't on the website, so he couldn't see the details in front of him, and he couldn't be bothered to get up and walk around to the two cars we were interested in with us. We walked away.
Dealer three was closing early and didn't have time to show us what we needed and had no interest in arranging a time another day, so we walked away.
Dealer four didn't shut up from the second we approached the first car. He decided to try and upsell everything to me as the "little woman", and spoke to me like I was an idiot. Alas, hubby fell in love with a car there, so I was pretty done for.
When we came back to look at the car my husband wanted, and another one they'd had in that day, the guy was an a$$. Disregarded anything I had to say as I don't drive, treated me like I was ignorant as I don't have a Y chromosome. Tried to tell me that a list of advisories as long as my arm weren't important, and when I googled the faults noted on the advisories and told my husband what the implications of that meant, he started shouting at me not to believe everything I read on google.
Then when I asked to look under the bonnet of my husband's preference (armed with a list of things to look for) he started shouting at me and insisting I was accusing him of selling bangers (it was a 16yo car for £400...)
He told me I knew nothing (ok, so I know very little, but my dad who knows a lot had given me a very detailed list of what to look for) and it was up to my husband to check as he was the man and the one who drove. Hubby promptly spoke up and said I knew much more than him and he'd rather I looked, but at this point I'd had enough and left. Hubby decided to test drive, and fell in love. He then had to come back to me in the van and ask very sheepishly if I'd mind drawing out the cash for the car as he wanted it.
Made it clear to him what he needed to check, and when he went back to check the list I'd given him, the dealer didn't bat an eyelid. Hubby was even texting me photos so I could tell him if it was ok or not.
Frankly, disgusting behaviour from the dealer, and I will never even consider them again, but this time hubby had fallen in love.
I made sure I gave the car a good once over when it got back, and had it looked at and thankfully it seems we got off ok, but the guy was an a-hole and if I'd had my way, would have gotten a slap and no sale...0 -

Frankly your husband has a lot to answer for here! I wouldn't allow a car salesman to talk to my partner in such a degrading manner, let alone buy the car with you having walked away and sat in the van0 -
Yes. i've the same problem with my bodyman.
He "sourced" this for me and reckoned he could have it on the road again for £500....
... needless to say we went over budget.
Sure you managed to turn it round as "one careful owner, full service history" with a bit of filler, and a few panels from the scrappy to some poor mug though. Hopefully you don't source all your stock like this?0 -
Bantex, you've hit the nail on the head. If through discussion (really skilled interrogation) the salesman establishes what the customer really needs (not wants) and they don't have what they need on the lot, they should have established enough rapport to say, I don't have it, do you want me to get one in. A true sale, not sell you what I've got.
Funnily enough, that professional salesman will sell many, many more cars to that buyer and their friends and family, than one commission hound getting rid of a stock car.0
