Alternatively, it could be the operator eating toffees at work.

Throw the words “NSA”, “GCHQ”, “bomb”, “Trident”, Al-Qaeda”, “Bin Laden”, “Isis”, “IED”, “suicide” and “drone” liberally and casually into your telephone conversations.

Within a couple of days your telephone line will magically become crystal-clear.

(As now will mine. )

Actually wondering if that is a serious suggestion and whether its worth trying, as I am fed-up with my internet connectivity problems.

Words like that do crop up, from time to time, in my phone conversations (just as a normal person in the street who doesn't agree with all that.....) and I have been wondering......

    Shall I start now "warmongers.....GCHQ...warmongers.....drones...warmongers...ISIS....?

    :rotfl::rotfl:

Yep...that is a serious query actually, as I am having numerous problems with my phone and broadband and still in process of getting it sorted out.

For right now...a little side query is: why does it occasionally sound like someone has picked up another phone in my house when I pick up one of my phones to make a phonecall? For all the world, I could swear sometimes that someone had picked up my hall phone when I myself have just picked up my study phone and started using it (except that I know there is no-one else in my house at the time, so they couldn't possibly have done so).

I found crackle can come from the power cable connection to cordless phones. If you move it around a little it could make the connection a bit better and stop some of the noise. The sharp bends in the cable underneath the base station do not help.

Can't really see why this problem has been going on for so long.If you have done what UXB said in post 2 you should really be in a position to say whether the fault is your problem or with Openreach.I had exactly the same problem with crackling on my mothers phone and with a NTE5 box fitted it was 1 hours works to establish is was a fault outside the house.Openreach came within 48 hours found a broken wire and replaced the wire from the gutter to the NTE5 box and fault fixed at no cost to her.

After a period of several week/months, the crackle is back. All cables plugs have been changed round.

    Later today/weekend, I will:-

    disconnect all three phones,

remove faceplate and plug one phone only in, first without a filter then with.

    use the 17070>2 test number

    gradually reconnect everything.

Whilst I can hear a crackle, you might hear the sound of breaking glass as I throw the phone though window soon!.

OK, a step nearer. We have a dual faceplate. The phone plug goes in separate to the other plug and have always thought a filter wasn't needed, but today I inserted one into the phone slot on faceplate. Into that both phone and router were inserted...........................

    Success.! crystal clear phonecalls.

Then I started up internet only it wouldn't? Despite many times trying, no connection. I removed the router plug from filter and put it back in faceplate.............internet connected but crackle returned.

So, is it a faulty faceplate of router cable? Is there a "right" end to these things? and should I try other router cables just in case the one I'm using is faulty.

Assuming that you are using a filtered faceplate similar to this:

    25r18io.jpg

then if you plug your router into the ADSL filtered phone socket, then the internet obviously won't work.

If noise is only introduced when the router is plugged in, it is unlikely to be the cable but you could try a different one or try a different router.

What if you take off that faceplate, plug in the phone ONLY into the Test socket behind it and do the quiet line test (17070 > 2)? Do you still hear the crackle?

What if you then plug in a filter to the Test socket and connect the router? Are calls still quite and the internet works?
