    Any further suggestions please?

Throw the words “NSA”, “GCHQ”, “bomb”, “Trident”, Al-Qaeda”, “Bin Laden”, “Isis”, “IED”, “suicide” and “drone” liberally and casually into your telephone conversations.

Within a couple of days your telephone line will magically become crystal-clear.

Do you have filters on *every* point you have a phone connected (you need them on all phones AND the router itself).

if so do you have a spare one you could swap them in/out in turn with as if they are all correctly in place one could be defective

TalkTalk have fewer (no) options on their 17070 test line than BT.

Crackle can often be weather related if dampness is getting into a joint. You may find that incoming calls are better than outgoing (the higher ringing voltage on the line can sometimes break down the dampness causing the crackle).

If the crackle is only there with the router connected it is either one or more dodgy filters or a bad joint somewhere between your home and the exchange. Crackles can come and go depending on the condition of the joint - damp can make things better or worse. It sounds like you have a filtered faceplate so no filters. If that is so and you still have an old filter you can test the filter in the faceplate by removing the faceplate and using the old filter in the inner socket to connect your router and phone.

If the crackle is still present you need an engineer equipped for finding ADSL faults as the POTS only blokes will not have the proper kit to locate the fault unless they get lucky. You'll need to report this through your ISP and be prepared for a fight to get them to send out Openreach.

I had this same problem and it was never fixed - I gave up and moved to cable.

Some years later I moved back to FTTC and got a fresh line which luckily didn't have a fault.

    Best of luck

You could always call up your phone provider and ask for an engineer to come out and have a look at it. Most times if you say it's really affecting you and tell them everything else you've done, they'll send one out free of charge.

JasX, not filter because I have a filtered faceplate.

Owain Moneysaver, as you will see, this has been ongoing since March with only a few weeks clear. I'm mindful of what you say, but feel it may not be the case.

Kwikbreaks. yes I have old and new filters and will try as you say, remove the baseplate and try with filter. This looks like the route I will try after this post and report back.

    K33N3R, and yes, that's next.

Oh, I bought a new cable but it was too large. Will try the earlier suggestion though.

Neighbour had an identical problem . Turned out to be wire from pole to roofbox .Luckily i was able to isolate the internal wiring and proof the noise was external .

Phone provider will send an engineer but it will not be free of charge if its at your end .Thats why the recommends on this forum are to test all internal stuff first .

    Hi Islandman,

It is worth testing a different filte rot make sure that the filter faceplate isnt the cause of the issue.

IF you remove the filtered faceplate and test a separate filter in the test socket you can rule this out.

If the crackle persists in this setup please join the TalkTalk Community and post the details of your issue in the Home Phone section.

    Cheers

I am impressed that you Mark have made time to contribute, thanks.

I said I would introduce a filter after removing the baseplate. However a call came in and it was clear. I experimented using speaker, and the call remained clear. During afternoon, I have made six calls each about five minutes and all were clear. I have also phoned three times to someone (that didn't answer) because it was they who yesterday commented about the noise. I wanted to eliminate if it was their phone, but couldn't.

Currently with the line clear, you will appreciate I am reluctant to touch anything. If the crackle returns later today, I will definately remove base plate and try several filters in turn to see if this is effective. Will report back. Yes Mark, I have been a user of the Talktalk forum, but since it changed, I have not contributed, didn't much care for it.

Was the line noise free while the router was connected?
The only reason I mentioned trying other filters was to enable you to eliminate the filtered faceplate itself and you'd need a filter then to connect both router and phone. Testing without the router connected proves nothing. It is the duff joint rectifying the ADSL signal that creates the audible noise. No ADSL signal no noise.

If you just mean that the noise has gone away then if it's anything like the problem with mine it will return eventually.
