I find 120 mph gives me the best performance. 0 mph gives me the best fuel consumption - so long as the engine is switched off :)

They always used to reckon 56 mph was the most economical. It depends a lot on your car - the engine size, torque, gearing ratios etc. But broadly speaking, as you go faster, air resistance increases exponentially. In general though, accelerate gently, look well ahead so that you don't need to brake so often, drive smoothly. Repeated hard acceleration and braking is bad for economy. On a motorway, you should almost never need to touch the brakes - look well ahead, if you see other people braking in the distance just ease off the accelerator a bit, let the car slow down naturally. Keep the tyres at the correct pressure, soft tyres increase fuel consumption.

It's the filter that carries the dirt, that's why frequent changes are important.
If you can change the filter without disturbing the oil then the oil will be ok for 10,000 miles.

A filter will also get more efficient the longer it is in use.

The oil put more in suspension than a filter catches, which is why you oil changes colour.

An oil filter on filters down to a certain level.

Changing the oil and leaving the filter in situ till the next oil change is not uncommon in manufacturers schedules.

Changing a filter and leaving the oil is is pretty pointless unless your engine is knackered and you think there are bits of metal needing caught on an ongoing basic.

Best leave that idea to the American forums such as Bitog.

    As an aside.

Most manufacturers have a severe service oil change interval but it is usually hidden in the workshop manual or sometimes the owners manual.

On Volvo V50 2.0d the severe service requirement was to only use 0w30, A5/B5 from memory, but leave the interval the same, 12.5k.

On a last shape Clio it was a simple oil and filter change at half distance, 6k.

Any vehicle used round town a lot, doing lots of stop starg or lots of short journeys would benefit long term from a mid interval oil change as a minimum, you could leave the filter in situ as it won't make any difference, i never go longer than the manufacturers oil change interval on a filter.

I have a Nissan Pathfinder which is predominantly used round London.

It has a dpf and i consider the use severe service.

Since purchase i have been doing the oil at around the 5/7k mile mark.

The engine has always sounded pretty much the same before and after the change.

This time due to work commitments etc I have run the oil and filter out to one year and nearly 11k.

Consider that Nissan say 18k miles or 2 years!

Now the engine had been sounding a little louder than usual i thought, but as levels where fine i just cracked on.

When i did the oil and filter on Sunday the difference was significant.

So i suspect i had gone a bit too long on the oil.

    Still well within manufacturers schedule.

I am fairly certain that in the workshop manual they mention a severe service interval of 9k.

That was the first oci using Mobil oil and i have now gone back to Castrol Edge.

I peesonally think if you are going to keep a car long term an interim oil or oil and filter change will benefit your engine.

Other than regular oil and filter changes cars need very little these days.

I have out hundreds of thousands of miles on cars with little more than oil and filter changes. (And obviously cambelts etc when needed)
