What car is it and how old? It should have a service book detailing service schedules etc with it.

Ignore what the service book says and change the oil and filter every 4,000 miles or three months.

Thats rather over-the-top. 6000 miles or every year I'd say; whichever comes sooner.

However if its a new car you are probably forced into the franchise maintenance plans anyway to maintain the warranty. If you start messing around with it yourself you might invalidate the warranty.

I'm all for interim oil changes to look after the engine, but every 4k miles?

My annual mileage isn't that high but some people I know would be doing their oil every 6 weeks! Modern oils are very good. 4k is overkill imo. (Unless you own an Evo!)

Pretty pointless using modern, engineered lubricant to chuck it away before it is minimally used.

weekly - check fluids and tyres.
    6 monthly oil change
    yearly service.
and somewhere in there change the cabin filter once a year (garages never do it)
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

It's the filter that carries the dirt, that's why frequent changes are important.
If you can change the filter without disturbing the oil then the oil will be ok for 10,000 miles.

Thats true for the larger particles but not for the smaller particles that pass through the filter and stay suspended in the oil.

Exactly, that proves my original point.

new car as in showroom car? or new to you?

former: stick to the service schedule in manual. You may want to do additional oil changes but make sure the service centre you choose is allowed under the warranty terms.

latter: oil changes every 6K miles or 12 months whicever is soonr.
