Car failed MOT- what do to with it?
Options
Probably a daft question but this is a good place to ask them!
The trusty 11 year old Focus failed its MOT and I've decided it's time for a new car. I understand it can't be driven now (although original certificate didn't run out until 15th) as it has failed. It's sitting in my drive. Do I phone a scrappy to get it taken away? Suppose a part-ex is impossible (as I can't take it to a garage)?

What did it fail on?Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

You can drive it on the old MoT so long as it was not declared dangerous which presumably it wasn't as the car is on your drive and not at the testing station.
You have not provided enough details for sensible answers. We need to know what it failed on (i.e. how much to repair), what condition it is in, mileage etc. It's basically a choice between paying out for repairs/repairing it yourself, scrapping, px (you can drive it until the 15th), or selling on ebay for spares.0 -
As far as MOT is concerned you can still drive it util the 15th. As far as roadworthness is concerned a current MOT doesn't protect you from fines & points for bald tyres etc.
Getting rid of it.....either hit the web and see what cartakeback.com and similar will give you, ring local scrap yards or stick it on ebay as spares/repairs0 -
Tell us which spec and engine size/fuel it is too.0

An 11 year old Focus ought not to be at the end of its life. Even if the repairs are a few hundred, if the car is essentially sound, then that is more economical than spending out on another vehicle that you know nothing about.0

it's a Focus C-Max Ghia 5dr 2.0l
Failed on brakes. Bought it for £3k 4 year ago. Local garage said it needed new braking system as it had been badly installed. This was done for about 1k The brakes have needed fixed every year since. Spent £800 last year and quote was for the same this year. Had to spend £300 on the brakes just in October last year. Did do a lot of miles in the first year (about 20k) but only do about 12k now. Mileage on dial is about 110k.
Never had this amount of problems with a car. I know nothing about them and will just be happier having a new car under warranty.
Mechanic said I could drive it home but that was it.0 -
I would suggest a word with the garage who is doing your brake repairs, because it sounds to me that they are doing something wrong !
partictularly if you £800 on them last year and £300 repairing them again in October last year.
Is it the same garage that is doing the MOT ?
If so, take your car to the local council mot testing centre (the address will be on your local council's site), have them mot the car and see what they come up with. If it passes then I would suggest reporting the garage to VOSA and/or OFT.
To me it sounds like you are being ripped off.0 -
Putting it on a facebook selling page might sell it.
The MOT failure sheet is actually a big selling point !Be happy...;)0 -
If you have dropped £2,200 on the braking system in a few years then find a new garage!
What is the actual failure listed on the failure sheet?
Worse case you can drive it to a local scrapyard and they give you £120ish for it, cash the tax in and buy another car...just choose another garage for your servicing or repairs.
Or list on the ebay as spares or repairs and explain the MOT runs out on 15th...if will fly away at the right price."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Try a proper garage, i.e., recommended to you locally. You have been treated as a soft touch up until now and these things are cheap and easy to fix at the best of times, but basic brakes, most old hands could do them blindfold.0
