Tv technophobe, system advice please!

I am hoping some people can tell me if I I should get free sat or something else.

We live in a listed house and if we get free sat/any other thing on out side of house it will have to go not on the house but we do have an out bulging it could go on and could trench for wiring.

We are not in an area where cable etc is available nor are we keen to pay for any tv services ( though we do keep meaning to look into downloading films onto tv rather than computer .....we are extremely technophobic and sort of too bothered about other stuff to bother rectifying!)

This is coming to be an issue as our roof top arial ( connected is looking somewhat loose and looks as if it might be broken and need replacing. We would rather replace this with something NOT roof top.

We have another tv which is on 'bunny ears' because its in a part of the house wired for an attic arial but we cannot get reception from the attic arial, ( even though checked and double checked direction it points in!)

Are they ever effective? If so we could consider one of these to replace roof top arial or would be be better considering the free sat and sticking it somewhere outside?

Hope that's clear, it isn't really to me:o

What is your postcode? We'll need it to look up your predicted Freeview signal strength.

A satellite dish would have to have a clear view of the Astra-2 satellite cluster - roughly south east.

Thank you very much for your help. :)

I have now checked signal on freeview.co.uk and it says ' great news you should be able to recieve all the freeview channels.'

We could provide a clear view to south east on out building roof ( thinks, checks, yes, we could do this)

Is free sat significantly 'better' then free view? The only thing we ever talk about wanting more of is films, so that's why we think paid for tv is a waste for us. And a luxury we don't need.

If you were to get a YouView box, you could use the NowTV app to buy the odd film if you want.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

What sort of Broadband do you have? If it is fast enough and on an unlimited contract, that opens up a lot more options. (And those options generally involve boxes in the house rather than hardware outside).

How much do you want to spend each month? And what are you interested in receiving - movies, sport, entertainment, documentaries, arty stuff?

One of the major selling points of subscription TV is film channels?

We have unlimited broadband and its quite good.......for a rural network.

We're not keen to get into a monthly subscription so much unless we are truely blown away by it. We'd watch a film a week? More in winter maybe ( two some weekends) , less in summer...We miss video shops!

Yep, I know. :). But it seems a bit of a tie in for a few films a month and none of the rest, no? And a very inflexible expenditure?

We've had subscription before, overseas and in places where its the only way to get tv when I was a child  .

Right now I have free view, its fine, I like it. We just would like some more films. :). Not worried about more 'shows' or seeing stuff earlier that we want to see. If subscription straight to tv beats buying a couple of downloaded films a month then its certainly worth considering. :).

You view says our estimated broad band speed is not fast enough, At the weekend when its possible I will retest this with a cable.

Once you've rented four films a month, you might as well have a sub. Most of the film download services operate on a 1-month rolling contract. It's just a question of whether your broadband is fast enough.

Here's some free trailers that you can try to see whether it works...
