I must admit, I have never been given a home made gift that I would actually use, but appreciate the thought behind them and always send a thank you letter before I dispose of the gift.

Of all the folk I feel sorry for, it's the little girl I feel sorriest for. We don't know she doesn't like the bag, just that she won't be seen with it in public.

What Mommy Dearest plans for it (etsy? ebay? please-not-the-bin?) I shudder to think, & for sheer rudeness she takes the gimbling biscuit.

For OP, I offer utter sympathy, comforted only by the knowledge that the dreadful manners shown will spare her any obligation to find a present Ever Again.

Except that her mum stated that the little girl "only really likes shop bought things" and this was home made...

I can't think of any gender and age group more heavily influenced by the media and their peers than secondary school age girls, I think it's perfectly likely that a girl this age would have issues being seen by her friends with any accessory that they might deem "uncool". I certainly know that a colleagues 12 year old daughter has never even used the £120 smartphone that she got for Christmas as it would be too embarassing if her friends saw her with a phone that wasn't made by Apple - she's happier to not have a mobile phone at all than be seen with something so "tragic".

Mum could certainly have been more tactful and not mentioned the bag at all, but maybe it was a clumsy attempt to manage the OP's expectations about seeing the bag being used.

Wow - that's unbelievable. My daughters love bags and would have loved this.

As for having real problems.......well actually most of us do have real problems. (Some more than most!) Doesn't mean to say that we can't be upset by the small stuff too!

Uncalled for rude comment... hey, a little bit like the ungrateful mother here!

When someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make a gift especially and they are snubbed of course it hurts. It was creating a problem out of nothing.

But then of course we all know "There's nowt so queer as folk"
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

How would people like that survive if (god forbid) there was another world war/some large scale disaster that meant we all had to make do and mend?! I'm so angry on your behalf.
