:j:j:j but don't spend it all unpacking and slaving over the washing machine!
I'm almost guaranteed to spend my birthday ironing like mad. I'm one of these people who have the washing machine on almost as soon as I've walked into the house. It's a throwback to my working days, when I wanted to get straight before going back to work. I know I don't need to do it now, but I've found it's the hardest habit to break!Secret_Saving_Squirrel wrote: »Me too, oh yes, me too.....

I think 'dentistry' needs to have a whole budget of it's own! :rotfl:
The weird internet issue seems to be resolved - but just to be sure I now sit on the other side of the dining table so the computer can 'see' the router without a wall in the way.
I think this is why I've never been keen on the idea of Netflix or other streaming services. The gas, electric and water is just 'there', but the internet can still be an unreliable utility, and I don't like the idea of entertainment being entrusted to it.... I know I have dinosaur tendencies! :rotfl:Although I have used iPlayer, and appreciate it for programmes I've missed
Bitterly cold day today, but we still went out for a brisk walk, which warmed us upEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Do the washing on the 14th by all means :rotfl: just not the ironing on the 15th :rotfl: I don't iron anyway
Know what you mean about unreliability and streaming - when I watch iplayer, I download it first, which is why I don't watch itv etc, as they only stream, not download. Mind you, my kindle has the iplayer app, and seems fine to stream. Weird.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
I will try and pace the washing and ironing when I get back..... but I can't promise anything!:rotfl:
I have to admit to feeling a bit flat today.
We're still getting mice in the loft - we trap one every 2 - 3 days. But what with going on holiday in three weeks time and being away for so long, I really want to get this properly resolved, otherwise we're going to need to have about 50 mousetraps in the loft!
So, we've decided to get a 'man' in. He's coming tomorrow morning to have a look, and let us know what he'd do and how much it'd cost. He seemed ok on the phone - I think this will end up with the money well spent category
The other thing that's nagging at me a bit is what to do with the heating and water when we go away.
As it's winter we definitely want to leave the heating on, and the advice is to do this. We also want to turn the water off at the mains, and most advice seems to indicate that the central heating system works fine without that water on at the mains.
But there's another (less popular) school of thought that says that you should leave the water on.
So I decided to ask on this board, and on my cruising forum, and of course I've had a load of opposing advice which has just confused me even further!
I just want the peace of mind to feel that I've done the best thing. My friend will be coming in each week to check the house, so that is a massive help.
I always get a bit nervous before going away on holiday, but at this rate I won't be able to leave the house!:(
When it comes to it, we'll make our best decision and just go, but I hate this lead up period, and I'm getting more jittery than normal this time:(Early retired - 18th December 2014

I can understand the jitters! Its a long time to leave the house in winter, but you're preparing well, and you've got your friend coming in - I bet it will be fine, honestly!
As for the pest control man - when I heard scrabbling in my loft, I didn't bother with traps, got "the man" straight init's money well spent.

Oh dear, Goldie, please don't worry. Why not just brief your friend who is coming in weekly to keep an eye on the weather? We so rarely get frozen pipe weather in the south east and your friend could just turn the heating on if necessary.
I hope you enjoy the preparations!

Hi Goldie
Re: heating and water.
A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to be away on holiday for a 6 week period during Jan/Feb. I left my heating on a timer for a couple of hours am & pm and very low temp during that time to keep the worst of the chill out the house and to keep the central heating working. I also left the water on. I had a relative check on the place a couple of times. It was fine and I had no issues - despite quite a bit of snow whilst I was gone.
Not sure if this will help but this is what worked for me.

I used to pack to come home in 'loads' and park the suitcase right by washing machine. First load on within five minutes of walking in the door. Over the years that slipped, largely because we had very little washing to bring back from Spain.

Oooh what a great idea! What does it say about me that I'm looking forward to trying this? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:"It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living." Terry PratchettBought our house 2012Married 2015
