my stepdad used to calculate the day lengths and write them in his diary every Christmas until about April when he believed days were long enough. it cheered him up to see the hours lengthening as he flipped through it entering what he had to do. I often think of him doing that at this time of year. It makes me smile:)Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
Birthdays are good
I've noticed the days starting to get a tiny fraction longer - astronomically, it's just under 4 minutes a day, and that adds up!
I've noticed that, too - and it's sooo good! :TI am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 £124616 01/11 £89873 01/13 £52546 01/15 £12133 07/15 £NILNet sales 2024: £200 -

Yes we've been noticing it's getting darker later, & where I am there's a bit of blue sky today after all the torrential rain <breaks into the Hallelujah chorus>Life is changing...but I'm still Money Saving!0 -
Happy birthday to Bookworm!
Well, January is passing, and we're nearly half way through already.
It's now just about 3 and a half weeks until we go on holiday, and I've started to purchase various bits and pieces what we'll need for our holiday. I'll probably start the official packing list in the next few days. This is a five week holiday, so it could be a long list!
One thing I've bought is one of those emergency dental kits, for Mr Goldie. Honestly, he's always got issues with his teeth, I swear he's at the dentist's every couple of months! He had a tooth out in December, then on Christmas Day a piece of enamel fell off his tooth and today a filling came out. He's booked an appointment tomorrow to get the filling sorted out. But I have visions of me filling his tooth, somewhere half way across the Atlantic!
Apart from that, we are trying to get a walk done each day, but no long treks, as it is too cold out there. We're doing a half hour each on the rowing machine, so it's getting good use.
I've been trying out a few new recipes this week and they are all keepers.

We get back on the 14th March, and my birthday is the 15th, which, in my mind, heralds the start of spring, so it's the right time to be coming home
Mr Goldie's teeth continue to be a pain. He had a filling done, which we were expecting, so that's £51.30 on the NHS
During the last round of treatment in December, they put a temporary filling in one tooth, so the dentist looked at that, and decided that a crown was the long term solution. He's got an appointment next Friday to start this.
I asked how much it'd cost, and he said he 'thought' it was £39.50. I said that didn't seem right, so I looked at the paperwork, and he's going private at £395.00!!
I looked it up, and even a NHS crown can be over £200. By going private he'll get a nice white crown, and I may well have made the same decision for myself.
But I've really had to bite my tongue about this - WHY would he just agree to something without any discussion about alternatives etc.
This is why I do all the finances in this house, and I know it could be seen as controlling. So I can't really march him back to the dentists and demand to know what other options are available as that would undermine him.
But secretly, I think he should only be allowed out of the house under supervision! :rotfl:Early retired - 18th December 2014

Hello Goldiegirl,
A 5 week holiday sounds amazing, how lovely for you and Mr Goldie. Dental work is so expensive, I like your forward planning with the emergency kit although I hope you don't need it.
