    Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked

    I'm not sure who's the stupidest:
    • the organisers, for not having an effective backup plan for a showstopper scenario like this
    • the water suppliers, whose name will undoubtedly leak out (sorry!) whose inability to deliver on their contracts is now national news
    • the runners who decided it was nevertheless a good idea to run for 20k with no expectation of having any water available

    Doesn't matter. The competitor's contract is with the organiser. The organiser needs to refund, then seek redress from whomever they deem responsible.

    Do we actually know that there was a contract in place?

    In the link supplied earlier, all it says is that they were asked to quote.
