Rejected application

I've just had my credit card application for a Halifax Clarity rejected.
Which came as a bit of a surprise! Since I'm a 40% tax payer, have a clean credit history, small mortgage, no other debts, always pay off credit cards in full. I've lived at my current address for over 17 years, the same length of time I've been in my current (full time) job. I checked the credit references they said they used, my Call Credit score is 5/5, Experion is 999. The website gives me an option of asking them to reconsider, but only if I have additional information to give them - I don't, I told them everything first time.

Any ideas?!

    Not unusual for halifax clarity. You obviously don't fit their criteria for customers they want to take on at the moment for some reason. It could be some other commerical reason than anything to do with your credit file and history.

    Halifax clarity in particular is a bit of a funny one for who they accept. Seems harder to predict than many other cards.

    They have a bias for customers who already have financial products with them and of course a bias for customers they think its likely they'll be able to cross sell other products to.

    Those 'scores' from Exoerian and Call Credit that you quote are meaningless and pointless as you have now discovered.

    Its worth checking your statutory credit reports to check all on them is correct.
    But not worth paying for, or paying much attention to the scores that the agencies sell you.

    Luckily I didn't pay for them (once I remember to cancel my Experion membership trial) :)
  • You need to remember that CC companies want to make money. You don't have debt, always pay your credit card in full? They are probably thinking "this guy won't make us any money, it will cost more to administer the card" Just worth checking you are on the electoral role too.

    I guarantee it did not say "Check your Experian/Equifax credit score" as they would not have used these pointless and meaningless numbers.

    Not that old chestnut again, credit card companies make money every time someone uses the card whether they pay it off in full or not.

    Yep, same boat as OP. Good income, own house, no other credit card debt (but do have credit cards) - have applied for Clarity twice and both times dismissed outright with no credit check, so must be down to their profiling.

    I thought it was because I have the Lloyds Amex but someone else here told me they have both so can't be that.
    Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.
