Scrapping Talktalk TV for Now TV?

No worries.

That's not what Cornucopia said. And I still don't agree with that (we WILL have to agree to disagree then!). The activity has to be proven, not the ability to do the activity. I wouldn't want to be standing in court defending myself but there are (or were) plenty of militant types who would shout at people that they shouldn't be paying...Need or want Now TV? Need a licence. Period.0 -
The problem is that what TVL say ("watch or record live TV") is not quite the same as what the legislation says ("A television receiver must not be installed or used unless the installation and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence under this Part.")
Unfortunately, if a NowTV box provides unfettered access to the live stream of BBC News (which we assume it does), it IS a TV receiver(*), and therefore requires a licence for its installation and use. (And yes, it doesn't help that the legislation uses both "and" and "or" when joining installation and use).
(*) The law provides that a receiver includes all methods of reception - not just over the air.0 -
Only require a TV License if you watch the live channels, anything On Demand doesn't need one0

To be clear, I am not going to pay.
The only question is what technology am I going to use to watch a bit of legally licence free catch-up telly.
That is: I fully intend to adjust the tech to my LLF status, and not the other way around.0 -
Update:
I had my fibre broadband installed by BT Openreach today. Although the installation is messier that I had hoped for (two boxes and a number of cables), it is seriously fast.
I download radio podcasts, and half hour programmes now come down virtually instantaneously.
I also still have my Talktalk Youview box, which still works for Catch-up TV. I'm watching it now, in fact.
All being well, I have my AV solution and am paying £3 per month less than before.
Thanks to all that provided info.0 -
Thanks for the feedback, Cornucopia. Just in case you don't know, all YouView boxes are designed to be interchangeable between different providers. This was a BBC mandate.
I love the irony of that. Funny.
And Infinity rocks.0
